Groganco Auctions , Boston , Ma. has a general antique sale scheduled on Mar. 20th that features 24 rugs , textiles and flat weaves .
Nothing in the way of a standout piece in the selection but as you would expect from M.G. and staff a fairly diversified selection of clean interesting items .
A modest group in size , it does however included 10 mid – range to beginner collectable Sumak and kelim bag faces with realistic pre- sale estimates so if you on a limited budget it’s worth your time to take quick look .

Kerry Taylor Auction’s of London’s Vintage Fashion & Textile sale went off today and they have posted the results of the offering “on the line” now .
Overall the auction seems to have went fairly well for them.
As for the Ottoman Bohcha I featured in an earlier post it sold well over the high pre- sale estimate of £ 1,000.00 at £ 2,400.00 not including the comm.
This piece looked as though it was under estimated and the result certainly indicated that .
The other 2 early Ottoman items included in the group also sold .
In the end a nice turn of events for the well known consigner .

On Feb. 23 John Moran Auctioneers , Monrovia , Ca . held a general antique sale that featured one standout item . Lot # 1169 , Classic Second Phase Chiefs blanket , circa 1860 , pre- sale estimate $10-15,000.00 which ended up selling for $ 75,000.00 , not including comm. The pre- sale estimate was very conservative to begin with but as you can see this was a very snappy piece and well deserved the much higher sales outcome .Modest damage was certainly not a deterring factor either .A nice upside surprise for the consigner too !

You want fresh “comments” you got-em !
Concerning the latest “comment” posted on my “opinion” of the “Vok 2” sale let me see if I can clear the air for the writer .
What I said was “initially” I thought part 1 was a superior selection to the current part 2 but after going over the second part numerous times I had reservations about my first take.
This not to say part 2 is in fact equal to or superior to part 1 I just did not want to discredit part 2 to quickly .
Again this is my thoughts and opinion and is meant to be for entertainment and enlightenment only.
So here we go .
1. I still do not see as many items in part 2 that I personally liked as in part 1 but that does not mean I am saying that it’s still not a strong selection .
2. I am not so sure this groups sales total will eclipse part 1’s total of approx. € 1.4 million , but time will tell on this.
3. I think if the writer re-reads my comments in the previous post it might make more sense to him , who ever he or she may really be ?
But then I think anybody in the rug universe knows who it really is , right ?
5. I still feel this sale is gonna be the high point of the Spring rug action season , at least up this point !!!
4. That is in fact , That !

So to start this fine week off we have what the rug world has been waiting for , the second installment of the Vok Coll. at Rippon Boswell in Wiesbaden , Germany on March 13 .
As with the first offering this group has plenty of “Star” pieces to get the flat weave and textile community fired up in what has been a lackluster market so far , in this new year !
Up to this point I have gone through selection # 2 of the “Vok collection” numerous times and at first I thought sale # 1 was a preferable melange but now I am not so sure .
I think Mr Maltzahn has spent quite a bit of time contemplating about which pieces are best suited for each group and this assortment has grown on me .
This time out the auction seems a little top loaded with kelims but still a top notch inventory none the less .
After all that personal dribble I single out a couple of pieces that from a personal standpoint I thought were particularly impressive .
Lot # 135 , Large Medallion Suzani . pre-sale est. € 40,000.00 . Not an inexpensive starting point but the warrants it !
Lot # 138 , Shakhrisyabz Suzani . Pre-sale est. € 40,000.00.
Again not easy to deal with but certainly worth it and this Suzani should do very well in my humble opinion !
A strong showing will most assuredly be a shot in the arm for the overall rug collecting market and could possibly be the high point of the spring auction season !
So once again , Good Luck to Messer’s Vok and Maltzahn on their upcoming endeavor !

“Netherhampton Salesrooms” , Salisbury , U.K. is back on the clock with their next rug and textile offering scheduled on March 2 , which is live , ” on the line ” now so if you have nothing better to do and with extra time on your hands check it out .
Well after a couple of passes through the 415 total lot inventory of all manner of rugs , carpets and textiles it’s basically the same type of sale your come to expect from Ms Barrett & staff .
Nothing at all in the way of a standout collectors item of any type however this time around they have included a handful of room size carpets with fairly high pre- sale estimates that could turn out to be pretty good if the condition is up to speed .
If this is your area of interest it’s absolutely worth your time to take a quick look .
They are particularly proud of lot # 155 , an ever popular “Zeigler” Mahal carpet , 15′ x 20′ , sporting a pre- sale est. of £ 25- 35,000.00 .
Possibly a first for them !
Time will tell ?
2/17/16
Palais Dorotheumn ” , Vienna , Austria has their next rug and textile auction scheduled on March 23 and the catalogue is live “on the line” now .This time out the sale features 214 total lots of rugs , carpets , flat weaves and trappings. Unfortunately not one item in the whole assortment could be considered a top shelf collectors piece or high end decorative carpet. What they do offer is a mix of mid – range or starter collectables and plenty of mid 20th century Persian city pieces that I would guess are geared toward the local buying public ? If your in the market for a common user type rug this could be the sale for you . If not this may just be a waste of your time?

Good luck to all the exhibitors , here’s to strong sales !!!

Quiet today !
1/21/16
Morning road excursion .
Next up !
We end the week with a bit of a disappointment.
Skinner’s spring sale scheduled on March 13th in Boston, Ma. which consist of 333 lots of pretty much a cross section of just about all the weaving areas is live “on the line ” now .
Now for the bad part .
Other than the early Ming fragment , lot # 84 ( circa 16th century ? ) on the cover of the catalogue nothing in the way of a standout collectors item of any type.
As has been their M.O. in recent times the sale for the most part consist of a large selection of mid- range starter type collectors pieces in mediocre condition .
Don’t get me wrong there are some interesting items in the sale just nothing in the way of a show stopper to get the rug community buzzing !
The strength of the sale inventory if you want to call it that is a hand full of somewhat better room size decorative carpets that condition aside look pretty good in the illustrations .
One more thing worth noting , nothing less than 42 various types of ” Kashmir ” shawls included in the group .
I guess that part of the market remains HOT !
So the week ends on a flat note !
A sticky wicket by any other name is still a sticky wicket ! ,Sheik Frederich , 2016.

Extremely windy and quiet !

Oh me , oh mi , what we have to contemplate now is the upcoming rug auction at Bonham’s , San Francisco on appropriately , Feb. 29th !
Where to start is the real question .
Just when you think it can’t get any worse at Bonham’s it does.
This is certainly a bargain basement , house cleaning sale if there ever was one .
The sale consist of 390 lots of all manner of very low end rugs , carpets , textiles , and trappings .
Nothing at all worth mentioning .
Can’t be sure where they are going with this offering but I will say this , it makes the last few “Netherhampton” sales look good.
One positive feature is at least the pre-sale estimates are overall fairly conservative so if your looking for goods to resale at your local flea market this could be the sale for you !
Staging a catalog rug sale cost pretty much the same and takes more or less the same amount of time if they offer good to better items or rubbish so even if the sell all this hodgepodge I don’t see how they figure to come out ahead ?
Not even sure if it’s worth your time to take a quick .
One would think Bonham’s is certainly capable of putting on a better sale than this but maybe their holding all the “top shelf pieces” for the next major sale , Or Not !
2/3/16
Nothing more than more silience !
2/4/16
Ditto !
2/5/16
Kerry Taylor Auctions of London , England has another one of their “Vintage Fashion and Textile” sales scheduled on Feb. 23.
As with their past auctions nothing in the way of rugs or carpets but the group does include an assortment of ethnic textiles at the tail end of the sale , three of which seem somewhat intriguing .
The one that caught my eye first is featured but the other 2 also look pretty good .
Lot # 362 , Ottomen Bohcha , possibly circa 1830 . Pre- sale est. £ 6-1,000.00.
Seems realistic.
In a week of stagnate action if this your cup of tea they could be good .

One piece of pertinent fresh rug news !

Morning road trip , no action.
Out of town visitors in the afternoon and commerce .
Cowan’s of Cincinnati , Ohio held their general antique auction today and as far as the rug and carpet portion of the sale goes it went very well for them .
Out of the 34 pieces included in the sale only1failed to find a new home .
This was for sure a limited group but some of the pieces sold for pretty good prices.
As for the item I featured in a previous post , lot # 162 , Baluch bag face it sold over its high pre- sale estimate of $150-250.00 at $ 553.50 including comm. Considering the poor condition of the piece not a big deal but I did feel it was the most Interesting collectors lot in the modest size assortment .
In this slow market still worth a line or two !
2/14/15

As far as up to date rug world news goes we are off to a slow start this week but not to worry there is one inconsequential item that will possibly amuse you .
A new comment has been posted on “Rapstan Review” and if you are at all familiar with the creatures of the rug cosmos you can figure out who is behind the fake”nom de plume” !
To those it my concern .
1. I don’t get much in the way of complaints about the “script type” font , so it stays !2. I want to keep a neutral bias to the blog on all auction house issues , it’s not my job to promote any particular auction house !
3. I feature pieces I find somewhat interesting and also to have illustrations for the posts , that’s all .
Certainly not for educational purposes .
That’s not the purpose of the blog .
It’s for news and entertainment !
As I have always stated all comments are still welcome whether I find them constructive , Or not !

Reports are starting to trickle in from this past weekends “High Noon” auction and show in Mesa , Az . and it appears things were a little on the slow side at the auction and also for the dealers in the exhibition hall .
Some felt the quality of the auction items were not up to the previous sales before the show changed owners and the dealers just thought it was lack luster in general .
So much for a strong start to the new year collecting season .
1/27/16
Remains weak !

It’s been a very tough January in the “Rock N Roll” world and now another unfortunate passing .
Paul Kantner , a founding member of the seminal San Francisco 60’s band “Jefferson Airplane” passed away today from complications of a heart attack .
R.I.P. , your legacy will live on !
The “Gert K .Nagel ” Special sale at Nagel Auktion , Stuttgart , Germany is nothing more than history now and in one aspect it went fairly well for them.
Out of the 213 rug and textile lots offered up only 38 failed to find new homes .
This works out to a sold percentage of about 82% .
Pretty good !
Now for the bad part .
For the most part the prices this group garnered were very weak with more than a few selling under their pre- sale estimates .
As I mentioned in a previous post this looked more like a house cleaning sale than a legitimate collection and the prices fetched might reflect it !
A somewhat disappointing start to the 2016 rug auction season !
As for the lot I featured in the earlier post it sold but very poorly .
Lot # 2403 Kazak prayer rug , pre- sale est. € 2,500.00 , sold for € 1,300.00.
So much for it being published !
Could it have had condition issues ?
1/29/16
Still in a holding pattern up to this point but one minor piece of rug universe news .
Cowan’s Auctions in Cincinnati , Ohio has a general antique sale scheduled on Feb. 13 that includes 34 various oriental rugs and carpets .Nothing particularly great but one lot I thought was at least mildly interesting .
Lot # 162 Baluch bag face . Pre- sale est. $150-250.00.Rough condition but a good design. These peacock bags are always popular .
1/30/16
Stagnant !
