Silent start .
You want action you got it !
Rippon- Boswell's “Vok” coll. sale scheduled on April 11 in Wiesbaden , Germany is live “on the line ” now , for your viewing pleasure !
What have to look forward to is pt.1 of certainly a highly anticipated auction of a very well known and admired group of susani's , flat weaves and sumakh's .
This first portion is a cross section of 88 items from all the “Vok” collection publications.
Going over the sale inventory I noticed a notable amount of the best pieces in the collection are not included , most likely held back for pt. 2 .
Possibly to see how the first portion fairs in this spotty rug market ?
Flat weaves and textiles are considered a secondary part of the general rug market “in my opinion” so it's seems to be a smart play to split it up over a period of time .
Avoid overload .
The Vok collection stands on its own as far as its importance and quality so hopefully it does well for Mr Vok and adds a needed spark to the oriental rug market in general !
This auction will probably stand as a reference on Susani / flat weave prices for the foreseeable future.
It will undoubtedly be one of the highlights of 2015 in the rug and textile auction world .
One thing worth noting .
The pre- sale estimates are up to speed on everything in the session and somewhat aggressive on the best susani's included in this first selection .
That said I have listed 4 lots that caught my eye below .
My taste my picks !
Critics are always invited !!
Lot # 34 , Lakai Susani , pre- sale est. € 45-55,000.00.
An aggressive but deserved pre-sale estimate .
Lot # 61 , Nigde kelim , pre – sale est. € 7-9,000.00.
This type of kelim has always been one of my favorites and great colors ta boot .
Shakhrisyabz susani, lot # 67, pre – sale est. € 35-45,000.00.
Again great character , design and color .
Lot # 68 , Zarafshan susani , pre – sale est. € 15-18,000.00.
What can I say , my favorite piece in the whole sale and buy able too !
Sotheby's , London has their Spring “Arts of the Islamic World ” sale scheduled on April 22 this year.
As usual not much in the way of oriental rugs but there are 14 fairly interesting early Islamic textiles in the offering , if that's your cup of tea !
They have however included 1 oriental carpet and its a reasonably important item as far as I can figure .
Lot # 190 , The Holms Hepburn Coronation Carpet , 17th century. The piece a has an interesting provenance and sports a pre- sale est. of £ 100 – 150,000.00 . You have to think this will garner plenty of interest from the Arabic museum crowd !
I also found one of the textile lots to be quite intriguing.
Lot # 95 , Ottoman silk & metal thread bag , early 19th century . Pre- sale est. £ 10-15,000.00 . Again most likely for the same group of buyers .
Still a pretty cool item.
And the hits just keep on rolling !
Next up we have the Christies “major” Spring rug and carpet sale .
The auction is on the docket , April 22 in London , of course !
This time around the sale features 194 lots of all types of rugs , carpets and various textiles and I have to say there are more than a few fairly noteworthy items .
As usual the group is loaded with “fancy city pieces .
That said Ms Broadhurst and staff have managed to locate and include a fair number of good and interesting collectors pieces .
A couple of pieces that really caught my eye are featured below but you certainly need to check out the whole inventory of items , it's worth your time.
Lot # 100 , Mongol Empire flat weave carpet . 13th-14th century . Pre- sale est. £ 500-700,000.00 . Never seen one , should create a stir !
Lot # 101 , Kasghar carpet frag. Pre-sale est. £ 12-16,000.00 . My favorite piece in the sale , if it matters !
The quiet before the Skinner's storm tomorrow !
10 am .
The Skinner's sale is underway and its started off in a positive mode but as we all know it's not where you start it's where you finish .
Skinner's sale just wrapped up and for all things considered Mr Kearney and staff just pitched another winner .
Out of the 335 lots run under the hammer only 56 failed to find buyers . That works out to a sold percentage of its over 83% . This was far from an important sale by any stretch of the imagination but they still moved a lot of merchandise in the first big sale of the year in the U.S.
So a tip of the hat to the Skinner's rug dept.
As for the lot I featured in an earlier post it sold well over its pre- sale estimate.
Lot # 129 Beshir prayer rug , pre- sale est. $ 2-3,000.00 , brought $ 6,765.00 including the juice .
You have to figure it was not a modern copy after all !
One other Turkmen piece worth mentioning was lot # 131 Tekke “animal tree” ensi .
It carried a pre- sale est. of $8-10,000.0 and sold for $ 8,610.00 including the comm. . It would probably have brought more but it was passed around the market for awhile before it was run through this auction !
One substantial upside surprise was lot # 150 ,Chinese “Hundred Antiques”rug .
The pre- sale est. was a very conservative $ 3-3,500. and it ended selling for $35,670.00 including the juice . A nice turn of events for the consigner that's for sure.
There are a few other side bumps you can check out on the posted results !

The Bonham's , L.A. rug and carpet auction just wrapped up and for all intensive purposes it went somewhat better for them than their previous results.
This time out the sale featured 287 total lots and out of that 168 found buyers which works out to a sold percentage of just over 58 % . They had been running in the neighborhood of 50% or less so it's a small step forward .
As I stated in an earlier post this was certainly an unremarkable group of items from a collectors stand point but they did end up moving a decent amount of merchandise so “kudos” to the Bonham's rug dept.
Wholly green “mole” it's St. Paddy's Day !
The results from the Brunk sale in Asheville , N.C. on March 13-14 are “live” on the line now.
The lots from the “Liberty Textile Coll.” sold very well but did post modest numbers.
However , as I mentioned in an earlier post from a collectors stand point the American Indian items included in the sale were the stars.
Many bringing very good prices.
If your interested in how well things are selling in this spotty market check it out you will certainly find it worth your time.
On the road .
And commerce .
First day of Spring and more snow on the east coast !
If that's the case I guess I'm going to Disneyland !
Great weather continues in So Cal .
Business moves forward but slow in the way of fresh rug collecting news !
This week ends with another “weak” post but I expect plenty of action next week !

First up , to start the new week !
The results from last weeks Netherhampton sale are posted “on the line” now.
O K , so let’s just see how it faired for them this time , out the gate.
Out of the 527 total lots run under the hammer 386 ended up finding new homes .
This works out to a sold percentage of just over 73% which makes it one of the better sales results at Netherhampton Salesrooms in the last few years.
Granted most of the pieces included in the offering were low end but they still moved a lot merchandise in a somewhat lethargic spring market.
Regrettably as in their recent past few sales just a hand full of items breached the £ 1,000 level . Only 9 pieces by my count.
That being said Ms Barrett and staff have once again turned over a large quantity of merchandise so you have to give credit where credit is due , so with that a “tip of the hat” to you and your staff .!!!
As for the pieces I featured in an earlier post both found buyers.
Lot # 427 , Sumac bags , pre- sale est. £ 4-600.00 . Sold for £ 500.00 , right in their stated range . I personally thought with the minor provenance and good condition they would have done a little better . It was however a very common design .
Lot # 483 , Ottoman textile group , pre- sale est. £ 3-500.00 . The lot sold for £ 2,300.00 even with the visible condition issues . Nice upside surprise for the consigner . It did seem like this lot would sell well since it was one of the only real collectors items in the sale.
Next up .
Skinners “on the line ” catalog for their March 28th auction in Boston is live now. Last week the print cat. was online but only showed part of the items included , now the complete line up is available .
This time out Mr Kearney and staff have put together a sale consisting of 335 lots of all manner of rugs , carpets and textiles. So after my first and second pass through the catalog unfortunately I don’t see anything in the way of a clear cut” barn burner ” collectors item or super high line decorator carpet.
What i do see is plenty of fairly interesting items along the lines of the last Skinners sale .
Items that are not by any stretch of the imagination high end museum quality examples but do fall into the category of older and “within the reach “of the general collector / decorator buying arena.
In the end a decent group of affordable items .
One lot I did notice and feel is worth a line or two is listed below.
Lot # 129 , Beshir prayer rug , pre-sale est. $2-2,500.00 . Not the oldest and far from the best rendition but a good example just same and a very realistic starting point.
Certainly worth a little of your time to take a quick look.
Another in a long line of silent days !
No fresh news but commerce is moving forward.

First up rain .
That’s it for today .
The upcoming Nagel auction scheduled on March 24th in Stuttgart , Germany is live on the line now.
After my first pass through the catalogue it appears to be a pretty much a standard “Nagel type” assortment of decent and somewhat fascinating collectors items .
This time around the sale consist of 205 total lots of rugs , carpets , oriental weaving publications and a group of ethnic and Islamic artifacts , if that’s you cup of tea.
The first 25 items in the sale are from a single consigner and include some of the most interesting pieces in the group.
Lot # 25 , Tekke animal & tree asmalyk is creating plenty of pre- sale chatter . It’s a fairly good example but does have some visible condition issues.
Will this hold it back maybe , maybe not ?
This portion of the offering also seems to have very realistic pre-sale estimates which should make at least this part of auction intriguing !
Unfortunately , other than the first section of the sale the bulk of the remaining lots are rather run of the mill with a fair share of low end ” filler” lots to round out the group.
In the end not a great production , but not bad either .
If your in Stuttgart it’s certainly worth your time to take a quick look .
To be open minded a couple of pieces that caught my eye are featured below.
Lot # 13 , Chaudor juval , pre- sale est. € 600.00 . If this piece is any good at all the reserve is very fair , however this item may just do very well for the consigner .
Lot # 16 , Yomut mafrash , pre-sale est. € 300.00 . Same situation as # 13. Underestimated ? If legit a possible buying opportunity for sure !
As always it’s still not where you start, it’s where you finish !
Netherhampton aside , Nagel is the first major spring sale so we are off to a slow start but hopefully the quality of items offered picks up with the next few auctions ?
Netherhampton Salesrooms ,Salisbury , U.K. held their Oriental Rug sale today .
As is their M.O. lately results should be available in a couple of days.

No fresh news .
One more thing .
Happy Birthday , Steve Jobs , your legend lives on !
Today's sale titled “Of Royal and Noble Decent ” at Sotheby's , London has just wrapped up and as far as the rug and tapestry portion of the offering goes it went very well for them.
Out of the 10 rugs and carpets and 3 tapestries run under the hammer only one rug failed to find a buyer .
Not a big deal by any stretch of the imagination but it does indicate a spark of life in a slow rug market.
As for the lot I featured in an earlier post it was the only real upside surprise included in the group.
Lot # 221 , Isphahan rug , 17th century. Pre- sale est. £ 7-9,000.00 , sold for £ 27,500.00 . I felt this piece had a very realistic pre- sale estimate and looked good in the illustration .
And apparently it was even better in person !
Great weather , no action.
That will change as the week progresses !
Sotheby's update !
The sale titled ” Carpets from Distinguished Collections” scheduled on March 25 , 2015 has been postponed till October 1st , 2015.
Looks like good things will come to those who wait , with patience ?
Nothing to do with oriental rugs but still interesting !
Skinner's , Boston has an “Americana” sale scheduled on March 1st that includes a very rare American needlework textile from the 17th century . The piece has been in the same family for about 3 + centuries.
Lot # 30 , The Phillips Family Needlework Picture , pre- sale est. , $ 8-1,200,000 .00 .
The textile is only 17. 25 ” x 12.25 ” , so there in lies the intriguing part , small , rare and possibly fairly expensive ?
Let's just see how this turns out.
Adios , Leonard Nimoy , AKA Mr Spock , hopefully we may all ” LLAP ” as you did !

The 13th ICOC has been scheduled to run through Aug 6-9 , 2015 in Washington , D.C.

An interesting date choice !
All the usual activities and hotel particulars will be announced then.
More out of town visitors .
Skinners update .
The Phillips Family Needlework Picture just sold for a very respectable
This figure is right within the boundaries of the pre- sale estimate so no upside surprise but still a hefty price for a small but very scarce item.
Mostly likely the top lot in this offering !
