Udo and the gang at A.A.C. are first out the gates in 1021 with an Oriental Rug and Carpet auction at their Vienna , Austria Gallery scheduled on Jan 23rd titled “Fine Antique Oriental Rugs” XXIII.
This sale features 189 total lots of all types of rugs ,carpets and textiles.
Well after a few passes through the auction inventory my thoughts are this ! What we have is a year end, year beginning house cleaning sale to clear things out a bit and maybe raise a little cash in these convoluted times . Nothing much included to spark interest and get the Rug – Mob buzzing just a decent selection of mediocre items with for the most part very realistic starting points ! Unfortunately this is not a very exciting group but the reasonable pre-sale estimates should create a positive outcome for Mr Langauer and his staff to begin the year .
A couple of lots that i thought were at least mildly intriguing are featured below.

Lot # 11, Ikat panel . Pre-sale starting point E 300.00. My favorite piece in the complete sale inventory. !

Lot # 15, Verneh flatweave . Pre- sale starting point E 1,500.00 . Not so old but great visual appeal !

Sad news to mention in the rock world today .

Go With God ! Rock legend and Guitar hero Leslie West passed away today after a lengthy battle with diabetes and a heart attack. L. W. was a founding member of the seminal rock band “Mountain” and also at a later date the super group “West, Bruce and Laing”. He played with many other well known musicians over the years and was an inspiration to a multitude other guitar players including myself. You will never be forgotten leaving behind your monster hit “Mississippi Queen” and many other notable works!

Christmas Eve special !
Grogan & Co , Boston , Ma. has scheduled a special rug , carpet and flatweave auction on Jan. 31st to start the “New Year” at their Boston Gallery.
The sale consist of 172 rugs , carpets and various flatweave / sumak type items. Many of these pieces are from the “James Opie” collection .
After going over the sale selection multiple times my over-all impression is just this . If you like Persian tribal and city rugs and carpets this is certainly the sale for you . Yes there are all the other types of rugs and carpets also included but the majority of the group is Persian pieces.
As it usually is with an M.G. production most all the lots are in very good condition and he has kept the pre-sale estimates at a very reasonable level which is a smart move to promote bidder interest in these choppy times.
There are plenty of good lots in this auction , way to many to feature , but a couple that thought were hi-lights and that stuck with me are posted below.

Lot # 27 , Kazak cpt. Pre-sale estimate $ 3-5,000.00 . Not in the best condition but pretty good for a piece with this dramatic of a design ! My favorite item in the whole sale !

Lot # 71 , Turreted gul design Salor Juval . Pre-sale estimate $ 30-50,000.00 . A mid-period example that’s very good but been around the track a bit !

Rippon Day is upon us !
So here we go !
The sale just finished up and from an overall sold stand point in this “China Virus” upswing period it turned out very well for Mr Maltzahn and the Rippon staff. Out of the total 246 lots passed over the podium only approximately 31 failed to find new homes. A sold percentage of right at 87%. A very positive outcome to my eye . This is as usual based on “liveauctioneer’s” unaudited results which do sometimes change a bit .
As for the sale itself the majority of the items offered sold at or near their pre-sale estimates , some a little more some a little less.
That’s not to say there weren’t a few notable upside pops to spice things up a bit that are featured below .

Lot # 28 , Chodor Trapping . Pre-sale estimate E 9,5 -12,000.00 . Sold for a very strong E 25,000.00 + comm. K.M. you back in the game ?

Lot # 142 , Tekke Embroidered Asmalyk. Pre-sale estimate E 8,5 -9,900.00. Sold for a very impressive E 46,000.00+ comm . A good example but somebody really stepped up to the plate on it!

Lot # 157 ,Sarab carpet . Pre-sale estimate E 3,3 -3,900.00 .Sold for E 8,000.00 + comm . Not a big deal but interesting and unusual in it’s own way !
As for the items i featured in the previous sale review , all sold .
Lot # 96 Qash’gai kelim . Pre-sale est. E 4,5 – 5,500.00 . Sold for a respectable E 8,500.00 + comm.
Lot # 119 , Gabbeh cpt. Pre-sale est. E 4,7- -5,500.00. Sold for a mediocre E $4,000.00 + comm.
Lot # 136 , Camel Hamadan . Pre-sale est. E 4,8 – 5,600.00 . Sold for a somewhat weak E 4,000.00 + comm.. Maybe too much damage and restoration ?
Lot # 131 Tekke Khalyk . Pre-sale est. E 5,9 -7.300.00 . Sold for 15,500.00 + comm. Not necessarily excessive for a sort of scarce item ?
Second sale o the day !
Soulis Auctions , Lone Jack, Mo. also held a general antique sale today , (Dec.5th ) that featured 35+ old and antique rugs and carpets . Two of which are worth a few lines. There were a few others things that were O K but nothing as good as the two pieces featured below .

Lot # 301 , Joeshgan carpet fragment. Pre -sale estimate $ 4-8,000.00 . Sold for a well deserved $15,000.00 + comm. This is a well known piece having been published in Hali magazine years ago by a mid west doctor / Dealer. I always wondered what happened to it and now i know !

Lot # 322 , Unusual silk Persian meditation carpet . Pre-sale estimate $ 4-8,000.00 . Sold for a very strong $ 30,000.00 . Again unusual and interesting in a strange way .

The fall rug and carpet production from our friends at at Rippon -Boswell , Wiesbaden , Germany is live “on the line” now for your education and viewing pleasure . This time around the auction inventory features 246 total lots of rugs , carpets and all manner of various ethnic textiles .
After numerous passes through inventory my opinion is Mr Maltzahn and the Rippon rug dept. have assembled a fairly diverse group of items for this pretty much season ending rug auction . As far as i see it nothing much in the way of a single show stopper to get the “Rug- Mob” buzzing but a wide selection of very good items of all types to give you and your bank account something to consider. Turkmens are very well represented but there are also plenty of other pieces from all directions to of course satisfy all rug collecting taste !
All said and done a decent selection of good but not great pieces and a job well done by the “Rippon” rug dept. !
A few items that stuck in my “limited” mind are posted below .
Lot # 96 , Qashg’ai kelim . Pre-sale starting point , E 4,500.00 . My favorite piece in the sale !
Lot # 119 , Bakhtiari Gabbeh cpt. Pre-sale starting point , E 4,700.00. Strong graphic design .
Lot # 126 , Camel Hamadan cpt. Pre-sale starting point E 4,800.00 . Not the best condition but a great decorative look . These used to be super popular !
Lot # 131 , Tekke Khalyk. Pre-sale starting point E 5,900.00 . Very reasonable starting point , scarce and desirable for sure !

This mornings “Islamic Art” auction at Sotheby’s , London just wrapped up and to my eye it was reasonably successful outcome for them as far as moderate excitement in rug world goes with a couple of major upside surprises to spice things up a bit.
The sale itself turned out like this from a rug and textile standpoint . Out of the 9 rugs and carpets included in the sale inventory 6 ended up selling . As for the 4 textile items in the group 3 sold one did not . There were 2 notable upside pops worth mentioning and they are both featured below. All said and done for a fairly small production the items that sold generated a sizable amount of revenue for the Sotheby’s Rug dept.I guess in a way swinging for the fences on this occasion paid off considering the upswing of “China Virus” cases in the U.K. and Europe right now .Lot # 448 , Mamluk carpet . Pre- sale estimate £ 4-600,000.00 . Sold for a wopping £ 1,854,200.00 including comm. When i first looked at this thing the colors really put me off but i was certainly wrong in this case ?
Lot # 450 , Ottoman Velvet panel . Pre- sale estimate £ 50-70,000.00 . Sold for a well deserved £ 214,200.00 including comm. A big number but the new owner got what i consider to be a great example !
As for the 2 items i featured in the previous sale review one sold , one did not.
Lot # 480 , Ottoman Saddle cover , unsold .
Lot# 493 , Dragon Sileh . Pre- sale estimate 8-12,000.00 . Sold for £ 12,600.00 including comm. i liked this piece a lot and i thought it would do much better but it appears someone might have got a pretty reasonable deal !
The second sale of the day at Sotheby’s , London featuring items the L.A. Mayer Museum in Jerusalem , Israel has been postponed till sometime in November ? with no specific reason !
10/28/20
Pushing father forward we have today’s “Islamic Art” auction at Christie’s , London that included 80 rugs and carpets and 4 textile lots .
From a straight up sold position this was for the most part a mediocre performance today for Ms Broadhurst and the Christie’s rug dept. staff . Out of the 80 rug lots only 45 ended up finding their way to new homes . A sold percentage of about 56%. Not terrible but far from a particularly positive outcome . There were 4 textile lots in the sale inventory 1 sold 3 did not .
As for how the sale went in general most of the pieces that did sell sold in the neighborhood of their pre- sale estimates . Some a little higher , some a bit of a disappointment . Only one lot took off and could be considered a serious upside surprise. All in a rather pedestrian showing for Christie’s rug dept. this time around.
Lot # 192 Kirman “Millefleurs” carpet pre-sale estimate £ 15-20,000.00. Sold for £ 62,500.00 including comm. . Why , who knows on this one ?
The lot i featured in the sale review , lot # 150 , Eagle Karabaugh. Pre- sale estimate £ 25-30,000.00 sold right at the high estimate for £ 30,000.00 including comm.
New guitar Wednesday ! the Unicorn !

Today signals upcoming end of online bidding at Skinner’s rug and carpet auction and so far to my eye at 2:15 Marlborough time things are happening but at a somewhat slow conservative pace . But that could all change in the next few hours by the time we hit 7pm East Coast time .
Just past 7 pm East Coast time and the Skinner’s online auction just closed down and at first glance it was a reasonably successful endeavorer for Mr Kearney and the Skinner’s rug and carpet dept. Out of the fairly substantial 454 total lots offered only approximately 66 failed to find new locations . A sold percentage of right at 86% . A very ,very respectable outcome and as always with the possibility of unsold lots moving after the sale .
As for upside pops and fire works because the over all selection was for the most part middle of the road there’s not to much to talk about . Most of the sold lots were in the vicinity of the estimates. That being said there were however a small handful of pieces that rose to the occasion , note lot #’s 1037 ,1041,1046, 1048 , 1060, 1095 and lot # 1092 which is featured below .
Lot # 1091 , Tekke silk embroidery. Pre-sale estimate , $ 1-1-200.00 . Sold for a very interesting $ 3,375.00 including comm . Pricey for a very small item , 9”x 9” ? Keith Haring ?
I featured 2 lots in the sale review and they both sold.
Lot # 1004 , Daskiri yastick . Pre-sale estimate , $1,2-1,500.Sold for $ 1,500.00 . At the high end of the estimate .
Lot # 1101 , Chair covered with Ningshia carpet fragments . Pre- sale estimate $8-1,000.00. Sold for $ 1,750.00 . My favorite piece in the whole auction !

10/19/20Get on the team and stay there ,wear a mask !
Gonna start the new week with another “Islamic Art” auction scheduled on Oct. 27th at Sotheby’s ,London featuring rugs , carpets and textiles from the L. A. Mayer Museum , Jerusalem , Israel.
To begin with this is a general “Islamic Art” sale that includes 190 total lots of which 16 are early textiles and 21 are rugs , carpets , embroideries and one susani .
My overall impression of the items in the sale inventory they are all for the most part all better examples and if this is what the “Mayer Museum” is de accessioning they must have an exceptional and comprehensive collection !
Not particularly well publicized this selection is well worth your time to take a quick look ,see !
A few pieces that stuck in my mind are posted below . Lot # 116 , Ottoman textile frag. Pre-sale estimate £ 4-6,000.00 . My favorite item in the whole sale !
Lot # 173 , Oushak cpt. Pre-sale estimate £ 20-30,000.00 . Much more colorful and interesting example than you generally see .
Lot # 181 , Caucasian Dragon cpt. frag. Pre-sale estimate £ 15-20,000.00. A very representative fragment to my eye.
More sad news in the music world !
Spencer Davis founder and leader of the iconic early British rock band , “The Spencer Davis Group” passed over to the other side today. In a life time in the music industry he had more than a few hits including the all time great “ Gimme Some Lovin” with the young and talented Stevie Winwood. That song among a number of others will keep his legacy alive forever !
Spencer Davis and Stevie Winwood !

Today’s rug ,carpet and textile auction at the “Dorotheum” in Vienna , Austria is in the books and overall from an items sold point of view it turned out reasonably well for Mr Matschek and staff . Out of the total 242 lots offered only 85 failed to find new homes. A sold percentage of right at 65% ,reasonably respectable in my eyes.
Speaking on how the sale flowed in general , and as it’s been in recent times, late , commercial Caucasian pieces were still running on the soft side and the Chinese textiles included in the sale were very weak . The largest percentage of lots sold in the auction were good condition somewhat late Persian City decorative rugs and carpets which still seem to be very popular in the European retail market. Perfect condition still reigns supreme !
There were a handful of nice upside pops to lend a little excitement to the production ( Note #’s 8 , 22, 43, 96, 110, 172 , 175, 237 ) two of the more dramatic upside burst were both Chinese are featured below .
Lot # 172 , Ningxia Cpt. Pre-sale starting point € 7,000.00 . Sold for an impressive € 22,800.00 including comm. Biggest pop of the entire sale .
Lot # 175 , Chinese silk cpt. Pre- sale starting point € 4,000.00 . Sold for € 17,800.00 including comm. Not a real shocker as this type of silk rug has been strong for quite awhile now but still nice for the consigner !
As for the two lots i reviewed in the previous post one sold, one did not.
Lot # 82 , Lakai susani. Unsold . Failed to conjure up sufficient bidding action . Reserve to high or just lack of interest ?
Lot # 152 , Tekke torba . Pre- sale starting point € 1,600.00 . Sold for a fair and realistic € 4096.00 including comm.
Something worth mentioning , online bidding on the Skinner’s auction items opened today !
10/22/20
10/23/20
Moving fast forward we have today’s “Islamic Art” auction at Nagel’s in Stuttgart , Germany .
So as i mentioned in the previous post i thought the layout of this sale was a jumbled mess but but after todays very positive results i guess what ever works for you works.
Out of the 79 total lot of rugs and carpets offered only 8 remained unsold with a sold percentage right at 91% . Considering the mediocre quality of most of the merchandise in the sale inventory this was a very positive turn of events for the Nagel rug dept.
As for the 24 lots of miscellaneous textiles in the group only 2 failed to sell.
Regarding the sale itself not really to much in the way of fireworks but there was a small handful of notable upside surprises and 2 of the more dramatic are featured below .Lot # 4 , Chinese red RKO design rug . Pre-sale estimate € 1,5-2000.00 . Sold for € 13,000.00 + comm. Not the best example by far but good provenance .
Lot # 123 , Silk Farahan cpt. Pre- sale estimate € 2-3,000.00 . Sold for € 13,000.00 + comm. Just grossly underestimated .
Concerning the 3 lots i posted in the last blog post , all sold .
Lot # 3 , Ningshia rug . Pre- sale , € 2-3,000.00 . Sold for a well deserved€ 9,500.00 + comm .
Lot # 16 , Turkmen trapping , Imreli ? . Pre-sale estimate , € 1,5 – 2,000.00 . Sold for an expectedly much higher number , €16,000.00 + comm. Slightly late but a still legit example.
Lot # 210 , American Indian war shirt . Pre-sale estimate € 8-1,000.00 . Sold for € 5,500.00 . The question is just this. Is this real or one of those very good German reproductions from the turn of the 19th century ?
10/24/20
For today’s rug activity we have the latest action at A.A.C. in Vienna , Austria.
So where to begin on this excursion into the rug auction world . This went pretty much the way i figured it would because there was not much in the sale inventory to get the rug buying public excited . Plenty of nice slightly better pieces but more commercial in general with nothing that would get the Rug- Mob gossipers yapping .
Out of the 168 lots run over the podium only 29 didn’t attract any bidding activity . A sold percentage of about 82% , right inline with most of the recent productions at A.A.C. . Keep in mind these are “liveauctioneer’s” unaudited posted results and are open to change . Not bad but about average for A.A.C. lately .
Like it’s been recently Chinese and Tibetan pieces sold very well , not necessarily with strong numbers but the pieces sold total was very positive .
One Tibetan item , lot # 92 is featured below , it did pop pretty well .
What else , well late mediocre Turkmen asmalyk’s did sell at all.
All the other types of rugs in the auction sold O K , but no pops . Some of the lots with higher pre- sale estimates sold but at or below their low pre- sale estimates .
Final thoughts on this one are like this .
Another workman like conclusion for Udo and the gang at A. A. C. . So keep up the good work and stay in the game with maybe some more interesting and unusual lots the next time around !
One more thing ,the 2 items that did pop very well are posted below .
Lot # 92 ,Tibetan rug . Pre-sale estimate , € 1-1,500.00 . Sold for a surprising € 11,000.00+ comm. Like i said before Tibetan items are very popular in the European rug world right now .Lot # 139 Tekke , “Salor” Juval . Pre-sale estimate , € 5-7,000.00 . Sold for an astonishing € 16,000.00 . A big number for a mid-age , crowded example . Nice for the consigner though !
The one lot i did feature in the previous blog post sold but well under it’s low reserve .
Lot # 15 , Tekke Kap . Pre- sale estimate € 3-4,000.00 . Sold for € 2,000.00 + comm. Being late and with a design flaw in the main inside border might have led to its weak performance ?
Chick Rock Saturday ! Note the 5 string base !

So to begin this fall rug auction season we have todays sale at “Henry’s Auktionhaus” , Mutterstadt , Germany and it’s underway on “Liveauctioneer’s” as we speak .
Up to this point it’s going fairly well for them but let’s just see how they wrap the game up .
Fini , so here we go !
Out of the total 353 lots run across the podium today only approximately 86 failed to attract any bidding action. A sold percentage of right at 76 %. Very good considering the mediocre selection ( in my opinion) and a suspect at best rug market , to say the least . As usual these are “Liveauctioneer’s” unaudited results so they are open to updates and interpretations.
Concerning the sale itself , as usual lately Caucasians were still running on the cool side but Tibetan and Chinese pieces sold very well , no break out prices but strong within the estimate ranges . The Tibetan rug market for examples with at least some age is very active in Europe right now ?
Something else worth mentioning ,the group of mixed ethnic textiles included in the auction also sold very well .
All said and done a very nice turn of events for Henry’s rug and textile dept.
One lot which was the only one to be considered a real upside pop is featured below .
Lot # 267 Sumba ikat . Pre-sale estimate , € 1,200-3,800.00. Sold for a surprising € 7,100.00 . News to me , for sure ?

After going through the Oct.21st sale of rugs , carpets and textiles at the “Dorotheum” in Vienna , Austria a few times i have to say i am not particularly impressed by the selection or quality of the 242 total lots to by offered for sale . Once again this is a sale directed squarely at the European retail market with very little to attract the attention of the serious international rug collectors out there .
The sale consist of plenty of late commercial pieces in great condition but nothing much in the way of a top shelf collectable item to arouse the “Rug – Mob” . No , i am not knocking Mr Matschek’s effort but some older lots could have certainly have helped with attracting international buyers looking for more classic , earlier specimens .
That being said i am featuring 2 lots feel are are possibly the most interesting in the group , again just my opinion !
Lot # 82 , Lakai susani .Pre-sale starting point , € 15,000.00 . From my point of view the most collectable piece in the entire sale .
Lot # 152 , Tekke torba . Pre- sale starting point , € 1,800.00 . A little on the late side but in great condition and a scarce main border. The best Turkmen in the offering and a realistic starting point too.
10/13/20
Second sale of the day is the “Skinner’s” sale also scheduled to start on Oct. 21st and end on Oct. 29th in Marlborough, Ma. This is for the most part an online endeavor including approximately 454 total lots of all manner of rugs , carpets and textiles .
Where to start on this Skinner’s production is just this , it’s really a lot of stuff for one sale even though it runs for 8 days . And it’s really varied as far as the quality of the merchandise included in the sale inventory goes. Unfortunately the down side is there is nothing in the way of a clear cut barn burner collectors piece to garner any excitement in the serious collectors universe. Just a ton of pieces with as Mr Kearny likes to present them ,very , very low pre- sale estimates which is great for the bidders out there and creates a certain amount of excitement in these trying times !
A couple of lots that mildly attracted my attention are posted below .
Lot # 1004 , Dazkiri yastick . Pre-sale estimate , $1,2-1,500.00 . Not usually my cup of tea but what appears to be a very good looking example with good pile ,decent age and great color .
Lot # 1101 , Victorian chair upholstered in Ningshia carpet frags. Pre- sale estimate $ 8-1,000.00 . Just a very trippy piece . Unfortunate it would be such a headache to get to Cali !

Next victim is Udo’s upcoming sale at his A.A.C. Gallery in Vienna ,Austria scheduled on Oct.24th .
With 3 passes through the auction inventory under my belt this is my unbiased opinion .For all intents and purposes this is pretty much an average A.A.C. assortment of mildly interesting merchandise . The sale is comprised of 168 lots of rugs , carpets and textiles from most all the weaving areas .Yes , there are a small handful of slightly more upscale articles to consider but the vast majority of items included in the group are good condition middle of the road , beginning collectors type pieces or standard decorative items. No standout , top shelf examples to stir up the serious rug aficionado’s of the world . A decent sale just nothing to get overly amped up about.
As it’s gone for Mr Langauer and Co lately i assume this sale will more than likely do pretty well for them or even better !
So , Good Luck to them this time around !
One lot did stick in my limited mind, but just a bit !
Lot # 15 Tekke kap . Pre- sale starting point , € 1,500.00 . Slightly later example but in great condition. Unfortunately with a minor design flaw in the bottom inside border .
10/16/20
Not sure what think of the “Ethnic Art” sale featuring 98 lots of rugs , carpets and textiles at “Nagel Gallery” in Stuttgart , Germany scheduled on Oct. 23rd . My first impressions are the Nagel online catalog needs help in a major way , for sure ! It’s so jumbled up you just can’t tell much from it so it’s better to try your luck on the “invaluable” online version with slightly better quality illustrations , better but not by much .
Up and away we go with this one !
Most of the items are arranged in groups according to their specific weaving attributions. Newish items mixed in with possibly older pieces. What it feels like is they are trying to do is put something better with somethings maybe not so good to enhance possible sales or in this case maybe they just don’t have a clue what they are doing . That said there are what appears to be a few better pieces scattered amongst the majority of late commercial shop stock type items that are to say the least hard to liquidate. I am not sure this approach will work but the pre- sale estimates are very reasonable so it just may turnout to be very successful for them !
A few lots i thought were at least worth a second look are featured below .Lot # 3 , Ningshia rug . Pre-sale estimate , € 2-3,000.00. With these poor quality illustrations this piece shined through as one of the best in the sale !
Lot # 16 , Turkmen trapping . Pre-sale estimate , € 1,5-2,000.00. Needs to be seen in person but this could be very good .
Lot # 210 , American Indian war shirt. Pre-sale estimate , € 8-1,000.00 . So not an oriental item but if this thing is “legit” it may just be the big ringer in the complete sale !
10/16/20
Moving onward and upward next in the line of fire is “Sotheby’s , London’s” , Islamic Week sale featuring rugs , carpets and textiles . After my first pass through the auction inventory it appears that Sotheby’s is swinging for the fences on this one with only 9 rugs and 4 miscellaneous textiles included in the selection . That said they are all for the most part very high end which will knock the majority of the main steam rug buyers right out of buying competition on this offering . I am not sure how this approach is gonna turn out for them but they are showcasing some pretty good merchandise, although the pre- sale estimates in some cases are a little exorbitant.
Two lots that did stick in my limited mind a bit and had me going back for a second and even third time are featured below.Lot # 480 , Ottoman saddle cover . Pre-sale estimate , £ 20-30,000.00 . No give away , but my favorite piece in the entire group !
Lot # 493 , Dragon Sileh . Pre-sale estimate , £ 8-12,000.00 . One lot that at least carries a realistic pre- sale estimate. There has not been a Dragon Sileh this good popping up in the market for awhile so it will be interesting to see if it sells and for how much !
10/17/20
Bring up the rear on this post is the “Islamic Week” production at “Christie’s”, London” .
Well for starters Ms Broadhurst and staff have stuck with the standard formula in this instance and have included 80 rugs , carpets and 4 textile lots which makes it a little more in tune with and appealing to the general rug buying market .
My thoughts on this auction inventory are it’s heavily decorative and commercial for the most part but there are a hand full of somewhat more interesting collectable items thrown into the mix to make a little more absorbing for the serious collectors out there. All in Ms Broadhurst and staff did a reasonably good job putting this selection together in a tricky time in the world/ rug world today .
One piece i kept going back to is featured below .Lot # 150 , Eagle Karabaugh . Pre-sale estimate , £ 25-30,000.00 . The only thing in the offering i personally found engaging !
Walter , One wonders if they got their facelifts and eye work done in the same place ?
Saturday Hi-jinx !

Dateline : Normandy Auction , Rouen France .
36 items from a Parisian private collection ended up at this 2nd tier auction house today with incredibly conservative pre- sale auction estimates . Considering the high quality and great age of some of the pieces it caused quite a stir in a very subdued European rug market . All the major European and other international dealers got wind of it and attended . Although the pre- sale estimates were very low the items sold for prices much higher . That said and having the European cartel in attendance there was still plenty of upside left “over” the sold prices . In my opinion if these pieces were sold at a London or N Y C auction house the final prices fetched would have been far higher . Two examples are featured below , however there were other even more interesting pieces that should come to light in the near future !
Looks like a bargain to me !

Today’s A. A. C. sale at their Vienna , Austria gallery is in the books and unfortunately for Udo and the gang it was not quite as successful as their past series of sales .
According to “Liveauctioneer’s” unaudited , posted results , out of the 157 total lots offered only about 97 found new homes . A sold percentage of right at 62%.A somewhat lower turn of events than the results of most all their previous productions of the last couple of years but considering the current “China virus” situation , being in the middle of summer and mediocre overall quality of the items in the sale inventory this was to be expected .
One thing worth noting. As it’s been for the last few years late date Caucasians especially long rugs , say 3 x 8-9 feet were very weak That’s not to say there weren’t a few upside pops to lend a minor amount of excitement to the sale. Note lot #’s 24 ,55 and 76. Not much , but better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick, one # 24 is posted below.
All said and done still a decent job in a tough time by A.A.C. crew . Most certainly they will have better results in the fall rug auction season !
Lot # 24 , Mogan rug . Pre-sale estimate € 5-7,000.00 . Sold for € 16,000.00 + comm.

Todays sale at A.A.C.in Vienna , Austria just wrapped up and from a purely sold stand point if “Liveauctioneer’s” posted results are accurate this little adventure in rug-land went very, very well for Udo and the A.A.C. rug dept. Out of the total 112 total lots offered it appears only 3 failed to attract biding attention . About as close to perfect as you could expect these days.
As for the prices fetched in the overall sale some sold over , some under but for the most part the majority were at or near the pre-sale estimates . That’s not say there weren’t a nice handful of upside pops to add a little excitement to the sale results .
Note lot #’s 5 , 26, 53, 83 and 86 .
Three of which are featured below.
Lot # 24 , Khotan rug . Pre- sale estimate € 3-4,000.00 . Sold for € 8,000.00 + 28%. Not so beautiful or old in my opinion !
Lot # 53 , Bordjalou kazak rug . Pre- sale estimate € 4-6,000.00 . Sold for € 20,000.00 + 28%. Not as much as back in the day but a substantial number for a fairly late example !
Lot # 86 , Khotan rug . Pre- sale estimate € 3-4,000.00 . Sold for a well deserved € 17,000.00 + 28%. Certainly one of the better lots in the sale , in my humble opinion !
One last thing worth mentioning . The large number of East Turkestan items in the group seemed to produced the best overall returns for the consigners in the entire sale !
This sale’s turn of events certainly deserves a “tip of the hat” to Udo and his gang for a job well done in an evolving and ever changing rug market !

Sotheby’s London held their “Arts of the Islamic and Indian Worlds” today and from and complete sale standpoint it was moderately successful for them.
For starters the textile portion of the offering was certainly one of the high points of the production with only 5 of the total 31 lots run across the podium not finding new homes . Indian and Turkish items sold very well . 2 of the sale highlights are featured below .
Lot # 123 , Ottoman Brocade . Pre- sale estimate , £ 3-5,000.00 . Sold for £ 25,000.00 .
Lot # 173 , Ottoman Brocade . Pre- sale estimate £ 1-2,000.00 . Sold for £ 20,000.00 .
As for the rug and carpet group in the sale , out of the 69 items offered 18 failed to attract bidding interest . A sold percentage of right at 75 % . Good , but certainly not something to get overly excited about .
Where to start !
The Turkish pieces in the sale inventory for the most part faired the best and as it’s been lately mid-age Caucasian examples in good condition are still running cool with the ones that did sell only bringing mid-range prices . Fancy Persian pieces did O K , but some of the room size decorative carpets went unsold . Also nothing really in the way of a noteworthy upside pop either to spark excitment. Just a mediocre return on a modest selection in the end .
A few lots worth a look !
Lot # 261 , Lotto frag . Pre- sale est. £ 8-1,200.00 . Sold for £ 9,375.00 .
Lot # 263 , Ladik . Pre-sale est. £ 18-25,000.00 . Sold for £ 22,500.00 . Found by Me and Clearlight at May’s field in “Brimfield” in the 90’s !
Lot# 269, Azerbadjian cpt. Pre- sale est. £ 12-15,000.00 . Sold for £ 17,500.00. My favorite item in the sale !
Lot # 280, Shakhrisabz susani . Pre- sale est. £ 25-40,000.00 . Sold for a well deserved £ 50,000.00 .

The highly anticipated “Islamic and India Art” sale at Christie’s , London just wrapped up and from an overall standpoint appears to have done slightly better than the Sotheby’s sale about 2 weeks ago .
To start with out of the small group of 4 textiles and 2 susani’s , 3 textiles sold and one susani. No great shakes but one textile an Indian shawl sold with a decent upside pop for the consigner and is featured below .
As for the rug and carpet portion of the offering out of the 76 lots passed under the hammer 25 failed to attract any bidder interest. A sold percentage of about 67% , not terrible but certainly nothing to get excited about either.
Like the Sotheby’s sale , room size and dozar size decorative pieces were on the weak side and unfortunately to my eye this overall sale inventory was just not as interesting as the Sotheby’s selection to arouse the international “Rug Mob” .
One lot that did pop a bit and was in my humble opinion the most interesting item in the sale inventory is posted below .
So in closing the complete sale was fairly successful for Christie’s but the rug , carpet and textile portion maybe not so much , that said better luck next time !
Still a decent turn of events for Ms Broadhurst and the Christie’s rug and textile dept. !
Lot # 91, Jamawar shawl . Pre- sale est. £ 6-8,000.00 . Sold for £ 15,000.00 .
Lot # 188 . Pashmina cpt. frag. Pre-sale est. £ 25-35,000.00 . Sold for a well deserved £ 62,500.00 .

Today’s “Rippon Boswell” for all “intents and purposes” signals an end to the convoluted spring / summer rug and carpet auction cycle of 2020 .
Under way !
The auction is just finishing up to moderately positive results .
If the posted “Liveauctioneer’s” numbers hold up , out of the total 298 lots offered up for your bidding excitement approx. 124 failed to garner any attention this time around . A sold percentage of right at 59% . Not a failure but i am sure Mr Maltzahn was shooting for a more positive result .
Concerning the sale itself the Chinese pieces in the group seemed to be very weak but they were for the most part a little on the late side . Also Persian city type rugs didn’t set the sale on fire either . For a change Caucasians held their own and as it’s been lately Turkmen , Turkish and all the other collectable items in the auction inventory carried the ball .
All in all a modest ending to the twisted auction arena so far this year . What’s gonna transpire this fall , who knows ?
A few of what inconsidered to be some of the sale highlights are featured below .
Lot # 52 , Tekke chuval . Pre-sale est. € 1,1-1,250.00 . Sold for an expected € 8,000.00 + 29 % comm.
Lot # 87 , Kashgai cpt. Pre-sale est. € 4,3-4,800.00 . Sold for € 18,000.00+ 29 % comm. Most aggressive upside pop of the offering !
Lot Lot # 208 , Ningshia sq. Pre-sale est. € 55-650.00 Sold for € 3,400.00 + 29% comm. Snappy but maybe not quite as early as stated!

To start the new week Skinner’s , Boston, Ma.’s 8 day online Spring rug and carpet production is up “on the line “ now and accepting bids till May 4th at 7pm. Not sure how this is gonna work out for them but they are really left with no other choice .

So up to this point there are very few bids posted on the Skinner’s site by early bird , bottom feeders but on most of the better items the bids that have been posted do not even meet the very modest reserves yet !
5/3/20
5/4/20
Well it is now 7 pm in Boston and Skinner’s has pulled the plug on their online Spring major rug and carpet extravaganza and from where i am positioned it turned out far better than i expected it to.
Here we go , out of thr 406 total lots offered only 80 failed to find new homes . A sold percentage of right at 80 % which is very good under these extreme conditions . Generally L. K. would work the phones a bit after the sale to get the sold percentage up a bit but since Skinner’s in a lock out phase i doubt this will come into play .
Yes many of the lots that sold , sold very inexpensively but as it always is , sold is still sold . As it’s been for awhile now late Caucasian items were still weak and the Chinese pieces sold reasonably well but since there were not any particularly noteworthy ones in the selection prices were more subdued this time around .
Overall the Skinner’s folks should be very happy with outcome considering the twisted circumstances we are living through these days .
As usual a great job done by L.K. and the Skinner’s rug dept. in this particularly difficult rug market !
That’s not to say there weren’t more than a handful of nice upside pops to lend excitement to the sale a few of the more interesting ones are featured below ,
Lot # 11 , Shaddah . Pre- sale estimate , $ 3-3,500.00 . Sold for an impressive $ 15,000.00 including comm. Nice for a fairly late piece .
Lot # 87 , Tekke mafrash . Pre- sale estimate , $ 8-1,000.00 . Sold for $5,000.00 including comm. Another nice return for the consigner on a fairly fresh example !
Lot # 95 , Cloudband Beshire . Pre- sale estimate $ 1,5-2000.00 . Sold for $11,875.00 . A decent price for a pretty snappy looking small main carpet !
Lot # 149 , Shirvan prayer . Pre- sale estimate $ 1,2 – 1,500.00 . Sold for a strong $ 9,375.00 . Nice return for the consigner on another fairly late but visually appealing Caucasian prayer rug .
Lot # 170 , Shaddah , Pre- sale estimate $ 3-4,000.00 . Sold for an astonishing $13,750.00 . A very strong price for a turn of the century weaving .

Kivo Saturday !
Today’s “Rippon – Boswell” online sale in Weisbaden , Germany is nothing more than a foot note in history now.
For starters the sale inventory was for the most part middle of the road with nothing in the way of a star piece to excite the “Rug- Mob” .
Yes , there were plenty of decent condition mid-range items included to tempt you if you are a budget minded dealer or beginning collector .
One other thing worth noting the sale was overloaded with late Tibetan pieces if thats your area of interest.
All that said this offering went some what better than i expected considering the lackluster content of the auction. Apparently the late Tibetan rug market is stronger than i figured , at least on the continent !
Out of the total 168 lots offered only 49 failed to attract bidder attention. A sold percentage of right at 71% , very good considering the overall mediocre quality of the group in general .
As for the sale itself for the most part the things that sold , sold on the modest side and the large group of Tibetan items produced mixed results .
That’s not to say there were not a few interesting surprises which are featured below . And yes as you can see still issues with R-B photo downloads !
All in all a pretty good turn of events for D.M.and the Rippon- Boswell crew.
Lot # 16 , Zeikhur rug . Pre- estimate € 2-300.00 . Sold for € 3,000.00 + comm. Nice for the consigner for sure .
Lot # 52 , Shirvan prayer . Pre- sale estimate € 850- 950.00 . Sold for a whopping € 5,500.00 + comm . A big number for a late Caucasian item !
Lot # 63 , Art Deco Japanese rug . Pre- sale estimate € 1,4 – 1,500.00 . Sold for € 3,000.00 + comm . Even with the harsh yellow !

So the Dorotheum went ahead with their rug and carpet sale today in the midst of all the craziness going on in the world at this time and i gotta say from a sold stand point if their posted “liveauctioneer’”results are accurate it went reasonably well for Mr’s Matschek and Pillanger . Out of the total 226 lots offered up for your bidding pleasure only 82 ended up not attracting any bidding interest. A solid sold percentage of right at 64% . Far from great but in this time and space pretty good all things considered .
Granted some of these items sold very reasonably and there was not anything special to spark the serious rug ( Rug Mob ! ) collectors interest out there , if there remains any but still an admirable showing in a very tricky rug market at this mark in the world.
From where i sit a “tip of the hat” to the gang at the Dorotheum rug dept. for “hangin” in there !
One last thing worth noting although far from an interesting selection there were a few lots that were a bit of a surprise to me and they are featured below.
Lot # 32 , Kashan , circa 1930. Pre- sale starting point € 400. Sold for € 3,328.00 . I am not personally familiar with this particular type of Kashan but someone out there liked it . A nice upside pop for the consigner !
Lot # 74 , Kazak prayer . Pre- sale starting point € 1,000.00. Sold for € 3,840.00 . Either a great buy for the new owner or hot red ?
Lot # 78 , Bakhshaish . Pre- sale starting point € 3,000.00. Sold for € 5,760.00. These used to bring really big $ but maybe not so much anymore and this one had substantial condition issues.

Well today’s rug , carpet and antiquities auction at Austria Auction Company , Vienna , Austria is in the books and from a rug and carpet perspective it went very well for Udo and the crew at A.A.C. .
Unfortunately the antiquities didn’t do very well at all.
This was a small ( 54 lots ) offering but more of a high end assortment from a rug and carpet perspective and with only 13 lots offered for sale being passed , a fairly positive outcome . A sold percentage of right at 76% . On par with other recent A.A.C.auctions which is great in this troubling time , pretty respectable .
Nothing in the way of upside drama , things that should have done well did , others more in the pedestrian range sold in the mid to low end as far as current rug market pricing goes . But still sold is sold .
As for the 20 antiquities in that portion of the sale only 5 of 20 lots offered found new homes . This figure speaks for it self !
A few things that seemed worth a mention are posted below.
Lot # 7 . Salor frag. Pre- sale est. € 8-1,200.00 . Unsold and why it was even in the sale is my question ?
Lot # 30 , Eagle gol trapping . Pre-sale est. € 25-35,000.00 . Sold for a very respectable € 44,000.00 + comm.
Lot # 37 . Yellow Ground Yastik .Pre- sale est. An aggressive € 30- 40,000.00 . Sold for a still strong € 34,000.00+ comm considering the amount of restoration. Still my favorite piece in the sale , if it matters !
Sunday go ta meet’in , Cali style !
