Not much to critic so far this week but one minor snippet of fresh rug world news .
Christie’s , NYC has another one of their “Living with Art ” sales scheduled on Dec. 2-3 that features 25 various rugs , carpets and tapestries. For the most part the group is decorative in nature but there are a few mid – range Caucasians included in the offering . Unless your a carpet merchant only one item could be considered a real collectors item worth taking time to check out.
Lot # 152 , Ningxia carpet , 2nd half 18th century . Pre-sale est. $ 80-120,000.00. Scarce , large and in decent condition , but a slightly aggressive starting point ?
One more thing !
Bonham’s, Hong Kong has an auction scheduled on Nov. 29th titled , “Images of Devotion “. Obviously not a rug sale but it does include one very notable textile item worth mentioning.
Lot # 123 , Silk & gold foil embroidery of Vairocana , 14th – 15th century , Ming dynasty. Pre- sale est. $100-150,000.00 . Rare and very cool .
Beginning of the Thanksgiving holiday weekend so most likely not much to look forward to.
Imagine that !
Just in time for the Thanksgiving “turkey day” celebration the Dec. 7th (sic) the upcoming “Netherhampton Salesroom’s” auction catalog is live on the inter-web for your holiday viewing pleasure but please don’t get sick .
That’s the good news , now the other shoe drops .
Unfortunately what we have to look forward to is more of what have been subjected to in the past few Netherhampton offerings . Approximately 429 lots of all manner of more or less low end items from all the major weaving areas . You name it rugs , kelims , carpets and textiles anything your little heart desires . As it’s been with Ms Barrett and staff lately they have not procured anything in the way of a true collectors item or high end decorative carpet . There are a couple of room size pieces they are particularly proud of but that’s about it. In the end nothing included to get the buying crowd aroused but if your in the neighborhood and need a little low end shop stock or items to sell at your local swap meet / flea market this may just be the opportunity your looking for. I will say this they used to post their sale results and they seemed to move a lot of merchandise which is a good thing but since they stopped posting the results who knows .
That said “good luck “to Ms Barrett and staff .
Happy Turkey Day !
Still on the silent side .
Part one of the trifecta is in the books so now we move on to the next step , S.F.

Quiet beginning to the travel week .
J.T. at Rugtracker is back on the job with a new post titled ” weibe turkische Teppiche ” on as you might imagine early Turkish carpets and as usual it’s very good and well worth your time to check out . Nice work J .T . ,
Final preparations in full swing .
Travel day on the way .
Looks good so far .
Smooth out , smooth early in.
But with the protests and road construction traffic is even worse than last month !
Time to hit the streets .
Unfortunately the happy faces have turned down and the overall mood of the market is somber. What I am seeing is that not much in the way of fresh interesting merchandise has been turning up and the everybody is complacent as far as how things are going but it’s still early and it could change .
One more thing to note traffic is still an adventure to deal with but tomorrow is another day . The weather is however very good !
Traffic is much improved to start the day so that’s at least a minor improvement . Now back on the hunt. Weather is still very good another modest plus .
So far today i am encountering much better attitudes and things are beginning to appear so it looks like this little foray to the east coast will end up on a more or less positive and modestly profitable note. In the end all is well that ends up in the plus column !
9 am , NYC .
Udo day is about to begin .
Where to start , where to begin ?
What we have here is a truly unfortunate set of circumstances for Mr Langauer and the staff at Austria Auction Co today. Out of the 389 iota run across the podium only 110 ended up creating any interest. This works out to a sold percentage of right at 28 % . Not a complete and total disaster but just about as close as you would want to get. A few of the high end items did sell but many of the better pieces with aggressive pre- sale estimates met with resistance . It remains to be seen how this sale will affect A.A.C. in the future but this is certainly a sad turn of events for them . My thoughts are that they just might forge ahead but maybe with something along the lines of a general antique auction that features a large number of rugs and carpets but it would appeal more to of the whole antique arena. Just a thought but you never know . At this juncture I would assume they will work the phones on the unsold lots to pump up the sale total and head back to the drawing board so better luck next time , if there is one .
One other thing worth a mention regarding one of the lots included in the sale .
Lot # 226 , Prototype Perepedil rug . Plenty of internet chatter about the age , authenticity and or amount of possible restoration done to the piece that could have contributed to the piece failing to garner any buyer interest. I am sure we have not heard the end of it !
Concerning the item I featured in the earlier review , lot # 208 Qashgai gabbeh , pre-sale est. € 6-8,000.00 , it sold for € 5,000.00 . Well under the low starting point . I thought this piece would do better but maybe the condition held it down.
Travel day . Smooth out and it looks good so far .
Early in to end the day . A pleasant surprise all things considered.
On the job at O.C.G. and the “Rudnick day ” sale at Grogan’s with hopefully better results than yesterday’s Austria Auction co. debacle !
The sale is under way and so far its night and day in comparison to yesterday’s A.A.C. auction . Up to this point all most everything is selling and some of the pieces are posting pretty good numbers with a few very tasty up side pops for Mr Grogan and the Rudnicks which was to be expected but is still is very nice for all concerned . That said some of the less important items are selling for their correct current market values , bargains possibly ?
The sale is now complete and as is the norm for a Grogan rug auction he’s posted the best result of this fall rug auction season with only the Rippon sale on Dec.3rd left on the calendar as any real competition . Out of the 107 lots offered for sale only 5 failed to sell and they were unimportant pieces . Yes it was a much smaller offering than most all the other rug auctions but by keeping the pre- sale estimates within reason it created much more of a buzz because buyers felt there was at least a shot at the better items and some did sell for realistic prices in this soft market unlike many of the better items at the A.A.C. sale that featured aggressive pre- sale estimates and went unsold , but that’s my opinion. One does wonder how much this sale affected the results of yesterday’s A.A.C. sale ?
The 2 lots I featured in the earlier review both sold . One over the high estimate one under the low estimate . Go figure !
Lot # 19 S. Caucasian frag. Pre- sale est. $4-6,000.00 ,sold for $2,750.00 plus the juice .
Lot # 55 S. Caucasian prayer rug . Pre- sale set. $20-30,000.00 , sold for $37,500.00 plus .
Next up Rippon and we shall see .
And don’t forget to vote on the new ” La Opinionada” poll !!!!

The bad day turned good !
7 days till NYC.
The Rippon – Boswell “major ” winter rug and textile auction scheduled on Dec. 3rd in Stuttgart, Germany is live on the inter- web now for your viewing pleasure and to my somewhat critical eye Mr Maltzahn and the gang at Rippon – Boswell have assembled a pretty diverse group of items this time around . A little high end and some more affordable pieces , a little something for all budgets which is always a smart .
The first 57 lots of this offering are the “Wollheim Coll.” which includes some nice items but nothing to really get excited about . Three lots in this portion of the sale , #’s , 1, Pseudo – Chodor torba , # 5 , Ladik Column rug and # 37 , Mamluk carpet might create a bit of a buzz but that’s about it for this part of the sale of course in my opinion only and opinions do vary ! Please don’t get me wrong I am not knocking the Wollheim Coll. just better things to consider.
The general inventory of the rest of the sale are where the items I felt noteworthy are positioned . There are more than a few good to better items for you to ponder , more than I can list but I featured 2 that did stick with me below .
Lot # 76 , Shakhrisyabz Susani , pre-sale est. € 40,000.00 . A moderately aggressive estimate for a great example . My personal favorite in the whole sale , not that it matters !
Lot # 193 , Jaffa bag face , pre-sale est. € 1,000.00 . Cheap thrills with a cool graphic design.
All in all the “Rudnick sale” is still the one I think is the more interesting offering of this fall season but this sale is to my taste the next in line and number 2 isn’t so bad either ! This could be the most compelling assortment Mr Maltzahn has put together in the last couple of years so “hat’s off ” to him and the Rippon staff for a job well done . And Good Luck at the sale !
Friday , silent Friday .
Celebrate National Pizza Day !!

Rain , thunder and lightning in the O.C. today but little else . Back to quiet !
Journey preparation underway !
Travel day .
Smooth and slightly early in and much better traffic circumstances, so far !
Sotheby’s, NYC , held their “Collections” sale today that featured 11 classic tapestries and it did not turnout particularly successful for them. Out of the 11 pieces run across the podium only 4 managed garner any interest. I guess the tapestry market is a little on the soft side !
Oh well , better luck next time .
Day one .
Rain , traffic and over all crappy conditions .
Still even under this dubious start to the hunting trip no unhappy people or frowning faces in the market , up to this point.
Fresh items and a few leads to follow up on so things are starting to happen but let’s just see where this wet and rainy road ends up !
Much better weather which is exposing more purchasing opportunities so this little soujourn to the East Coast is looking like it’s going turn our both successful and profitable.
The day ends on a positive note as far as business is concerned so another prosperous buying trip closes out in the plus column .
Travel day .
Weather wise things look good , for the moment !
Smooth ontime out .
Smooth ontime in.
Alls well that ends well!
Crack in the saddle again !
Multiple out of town visitors and commerce . Why yes , the elusive new client .
All eyes on Sotheby’s, London .
We are off to the races !
Well the battle for London auction house supremacy is over and this time around Sotheby’s is the clear cut winner .Out of the 156 lots run across the podium 94 ended up selling . A sold percentage of right at 63 % beating the sold percentage posted by Christie’s two weeks ago of a meager 50% . There was also a bit of fire works in this sale with a few substantial upside pops too.
Overall it was a decent but unmemorable turn of events for the Sotheby’s Rug Dept. because the sale inventory was not particularly interesting. Things sold but in the end just another slightly above average rug auction in my opinion . Caucasians seemed to be a little on the weak side but I think they have been for awhile now and there were no memorable ones in the sale listing to spark or excite either .
As it’s been lately Chinese items continue to out pace the other areas as far as market strength goes . Lot # 84 Ninghsia Rug pre- sale estimate £ 8-12,000.00 sold for £ 35,000.00 .Certainly a nice upside bounce for the consigner !
There were a few other noteworthy sale surprises besides this one which are included in the sale results posted on the Sotheby’s site.
Concerning the 2 lots I featured in the earlier review one sold one did not .
Lot # 81 Ninghsia mat , pre- sale est. £ 5-7,000.00 . Sold for £ 13,750.00 . Scarce and sought after so no surprise here .
Lot # 103 , Ghiordes prayer rug , per- sale est. £ 8-10,000.00 . I thought this item was at least mildly interest but I guess no one else did . Or maybe it had to aggressive of a reserve ?
So another modest Sotheby’s sale is history now and on to Grogan’s “Rudnick” sale which will certainly by more entertaining.
2 weeks till NYC !
What we have up next is Austria Auction CO’s fall major rug and textile sale.
My first impression is UDO and the boys are swinging for the fence on this one . 390 total lots of just about everything you could come up with . Some good , some not so much as you would expect with a sale inventory of this size.. There are more than a few high end pieces with some bargain basement stuff too , so pretty much something for every taste and budget.
I will say this , on some of the top shelf items they have not been bashful with the pre- sale estimates.
One other thought on this sale . It’s scheduled the day before Grogan’s , “Rudnick” offering so it could make things more competitive in the quest for the high end dollar !
Only one lot really attracted my attention in the group . I hope I am not being jaded but I still think the Rudnick group is more intriguing . Again just my opinion ?
Lot # 208 , Qashgai , gabbeh carpet . Pre-sale est. € 6-8,000.00. Considering the condition not an inexpensive starting point but still a scarce item with great eye appeal .
Return to solitude?
Happy” Guy Fawkes” night !
