The wind moves forward this week!
Travel day !
Smooth on time out .
Slightly early on time in.
Constipated intown traffic , again . U N is in session !
Netherhampton Salesrooms , Salisbury , U.K. held their Fall rug and carpet auction today but since I was in the air I have no idea how it turned out . Seems Ms Barrett and staff have adopted a policy of not posting the results anymore . They never did publish the results from the last sale on May 18th and since the previous sales totals were far from what would be considered successful ventures maybe we will not be privy to that information in the future because the total sales figures have been falling into the dismal catagorie ! Who knows for sure , only J.B. and the crew at Netherhampton !
First day , off to the races !
Great weather and good moods so far , so we are sailing forward on the right track.
Traffic is still formidable .
As is the norm lately various desirable items have been offered with more on the line for tomorrow so things are looking good.
Modest food poisoning.
As i stated earlier much more pleasant weather here than back in the O.C. .
On the other hand traffic in the city is still out of control .
With that being the case and even thought everybody feels business is on the slow side there are still no sour faces to be seen so that’s always a positive scenario to conclude a venture .
Things are continuing to turn up and it looks like this trip is going to end up on a profitable note which leaves nothing left to do but clear the accounts ,packup and prepare for the flight back to the O.C. and O.C.G.
Another worthwhile excursion to NYC in the books .
Travel day .
Back on the track.
Nothing much to report since returning but one minor piece of fresh rug business news.
Groganco’s , Boston Ma. , has a general antique sale scheduled on Oct. 23rd that features 13 rugs , carpets and one early tapestry . Nothing of any importance but better than a poke in the eye with a a sharp stick in a slightly slow market before the fall season moves into full swing.
More fresh rug world news !
J.T. at “Rugtracker” has a new post titled “The Ziegler Renaissance at Sultanabad” . Not nessarily of interest to the collectors field but as usual his work is very impressive and worth your time to take look. One thing about this particular post , its infact massive . Plenty of early photos of buildings that are very cool .
As always great work , J.T.
Results from today’s Dorotheum sale in Vienna , Austria are posted live on the inter-web for one and all to over scrutinize .
What do I say , what do I know .
The sale went for the most part the way I figured it would . Out of the 226 lots run across the podium only 104 ended up finding new owners. A sold percentage of right at 46% . Not terrible but certainly not what the Dorotheum rug dept.was hoping for that is , as they say “for sure”. The inventory was overloaded with European taste fancy city Persian and Turkish early to mid 20th century pieces and that was where the majority sales action took place. Some of the items sold over their pre-sale starting points but really nothing much in the way of a true breakout to get over amped about . A reasonable but unremarkable turn of events for the Dorotheum rug dept. but hopefully they put together a more interesting sale next time out and are rewarded with a better outcome !
As for the piece I featured in a previous post it failed to garner any interest .
Lot # 20 , Caucasian Shield carpet . Pre- sale starting point € 22,000.00 , unsold . Condition issues or over exposed ? Who knows ? Unsold is still unsold .

Another retrograde start to the new week !
Nagel Auction held their rug ,carpet and ethnic item sale today and the results were mixed at best . Out of the 215 lots of rugs , carpets and textiles run across the podium only 100 ended up finding new homes . A sold percentage of right at 46%. Not a disaster but far from a raging success. There were however a few upside pops and as its been lately Chinese Silk and Metal thread rugs brought strong prices. Persian pieces sold but the numbers seemed weak and Caucasian pieces were very soft but the selection was in my humble opinion on the mediocre side .
So another one in the books for the Nagel Auction house but because the inventory was unimpressive a can’t say the weak results weren’t expected.
As for the lot I featured in the previous post it sold but the price was also on the modest side .
Lot # 233 Tekke kapunuk . Pre-sale estimate Euro 5-6,000.00 , sold for Euro 6,500.00. I really thought this would do better . I guess someone out there might have got a pretty good deal !
7 days till NYC !
Final reports from the now completed NYICS show are that most of the exhibitors liked the show the producers are considering doing it again next year so kudos to all involved in the somewhat positive ending !
Keep in mind there is no reason this can’t be fun 🙂
Christie’s , NYC is staging a sale on Oct. 10th titled ” Opulence” that features 39 assorted rugs and carpets . Not the most interesting group I have ever seen and for the most part decorative in nature. However there are a few ” classic ” items included in the offering but unfortunately they are not in the best condition. That said still well worth your time to take a quick look .
One lot I posted below did attract my attention to a certain extent .
Lot # 183 , Khorassan shrub carpet fragment , possibly 17th century . Pre-sale est. a modestly aggressive $ 15-30,000.00. Considering this made up of pieces / parts of a larger rug , not cheap but still scarce and with a very cool look !
Early morning road trip then more Silence !

Extended quiet period .
To any or all out there who think it matters !
To repeat myself once again , last weeks sojourn to the NYC market turned up a small group of of above average collectors items , believe it of course or not , your choice . That said i am sticking with my previously stated policy of of not posting illustrations of fresh desirable pieces “on the line” . I am also going to continue with my on going thought that serious collectors prefer good to great pieces that have not been posted on the internet so they have the luxury of doing themselves once the own the item. However if you find yourself in the O.C. feel free to make an appointment at O.C.G. and i will be glad to show you the pieces in person .
Fear the Zombo Apocalypse !
Early morning road trip.

Netherhampton Salesrooms, Salisbury , U.K.’s , Sept. 21 sale is up online and available for your very careful consideration at this very moment . However as its been with Ms Barrett and the Netherhampton rug dept. lately this is just one more in a long line of dealer shop stock type sales. So here we go . This current sale includes approx. 401 lots of rugs , carpets , flat weaves and a smattering of various other ethnic textiles just as its been in their past few offerings . As is their M.O. recently nothing at all in the way of a noteworthy top shelf collectors item or high end decorator carpet , just another large group of mediocre / common items. I did notice a few slightly better dozar size furnishing carpets but unfortunately thats about it. As usual if your a bargain hunter or beginning rug enthusiast this might be the opportunity for you to see a wide variety of affordable entry level merchandise in one place .
Th upcoming “Dorotheum” , Vienna , Austria rug and carpet auction scheduled on Sept. 27th is live on the inter-web now for your viewing consumption now . This time around the inventory consist of 226 total lots of rugs ,carpets and textiles from most of the major weaving areas. Unfortunately from my point of view this sale for the most part is focused on the European retail rug market with the large majority of the pieces coming from the early to mid 20th century and not much in the way real collectors pieces . Nothing wrong with that but it leaves little of interest for international rug and textile community . There are plenty of good condition late Turkish silk carpets and Persian city pieces if that is your cup of tea !
After all that they did include a couple of somewhat more interesting items worth a second look scattered throughout the selection . One of which is featured below . Hardly anything to get excited about but better than nothing .
Lot # 20 , Caucasian Shield carpet 18th century . Pre-sale starting point Euro , 22,000.00 . If its in reasonable condition and not over restored could certainly be the high water point of the sale .
Initial reports in from the NYICS Show antique rug bourse is that there is decent attendance and business is being conducted. Good news for sure for those who choose to put up their time and capital to exhibit.
