Another quiet beginning .
Austria Auction Co summer house cleaning day , Yeh !
Well this this sale turned out to be about as close to a disaster for UDO and the gang as you can get . Out of the 196 offered for sale only 66 ended up selling . This works out to a sold percentage of right at 34%. Granted this had all the ear marks of a summer house cleaning sale but it still took time and cost money to stage so one would wonder if these type events are even worth the time and trouble to put on ? As for how the sale itself went City Persian pieces seemed fairly weak , however the Chinese area items appeared to sell pretty well. All in all I come away from this thinking it was a lot of work for very modest returns !

Christie’s, NYC held their general antique sale titled “Living with Art” that included 22 lots of rugs and textiles today and as luck would have it although a modest offering they managed to find new homes for all 22 lots run across the podium. Concerning the outcome of the sale itself , nothing in the way of upside surprises in the group and some of the unreserved pieces sold fairly reasonably . So that as they say is that !
As your luck would have it they have another “Living with Art” sale scheduled on Aug. 23 that includes approx. 35 lots of rugs , carpets , textiles and tapestries . This time the selection is a little more varied with a group of entry level collector type pieces included in the sale inventory . As you would imagine not a thing to get excited about but once again a portion of the items in the offering are listed with no reserves so there is the potential to get a bit of a bargain if run of the mill items are something you may want to consider !
Just when you thought it couldn’t get any more boring as far as fresh rug world news the auction arena starts to heat up with at least 9 featured rug and textile productions on the fall calendar so far and most likely more to come . With that and the ubiquitous “ART’s” fair in San Francisco running Oct. 21th through 23rd there will certainly be plenty of all manner of rugs , carpets and textiles to tempt your mind and of course wallet !
I get the feeling with all this activity on the calendar its time for everybody to get back in the pool!
New show alert !
The “New York International Carpet Show” is scheduled to run Sept.9th through 13th which is in the midst of NYC fashion week at the “Tunnell New York” , 269 11th ave between 27th & 28th streets . This was generally a new carpet production event but this year it will feature a large group of antique and collectible rug and carpet dealers ( 16-24 participants ) too. Many of the exhibitors you will recognize from the ART’s shows, Caskey-Lees events and the Larta and Sartirana show’s will be exhibiting which should make it worth your while to checkout if your in the NYC area on these dates .

The week starts with little or no fresh and relevant rug world news , as its been lately !
Celebrate National French Fry Day !
Netherhampton Salesroom , Salisbury , U.K. held their rug , textile and carpet auction today but up to this point no reports on how it turned out for them . Since they never posted the results of their last sale I guess maybe it’s gonna be word of mouth from now on !
Unaudited results from yesterday’s “Netherhampton” auction in Salisbury , U.K. turned up on “the saleroom.com” , another one of those online auction hosts and it appears that if these numbers are accurate the sale was only modestly successful for Ms Barrett and the Netherhampton rug dept. Out of the 341 items put up for sale just 182 may have found buyers if these figures hold up. That works out to to a sold percentage of right at 53+ % . Hardly anything to get amped up about but that’s not the difficult part . Only 3 lots broke the £ 1,000.00 threshold and many of the pieces that did sell brought right around £ 100.00 which makes this substantial size undertaking hardly profitable from what I can gather from these , of coarse unaudited results . Perhaps that’s why no results were posted from the previous sale on May 18th !
Je Suis , Nice !
On July 27th Christie’s , NYC is hosting a general antique auction titled ” Living With Art” that will include 21 lots of carpets and textiles . Unfortunately all the items in the group fall into the decorative category , nothing at all for collectors . However the reason I even mention this sale is most all the carpets in the sale are being run over the podium with no reserve which is rare and could create a buying opportunity if your in the market for a room size rug !

Unfortunately the week ends as it began with nothing in the way of current and noteworthy rug-dumb news !

Summer doldrum’s are in full swing !
Netherhampton Salesroom’s , Salibury , U.K. has just posted the new catalogue for their upcoming rug, carpet and textile auction scheduled on July 13th. As usual it’s a substantial offering featuring approximately 341 lots from most all the oriental carpet weaving areas . Unfortunately they have not included anything in the way of a standout item of any type in the sale inventory . Just another large selection of mid to low end shop type stock however if your a dealer looking to add common affordable merchandise to your inventory or a beginning collector looking for bargains this just may be the opportunity your looking for. One other thing worth noting they still have not posted the results from their previous May 18th auction . Poor sales , total disaster , who knows , no one but Ms Barrett and staff ?
The beginning of another long party weekend !
Independence Day !
A dark day in American History !
If you have not already heard , Austiria Auction Co of Vienna , Austria has another summer house cleaning sale scheduled on July 21.This time around the inventory consist of 196 lots of all manner of rugs , carpets and textiles . Regrettably nothing in the way of a stellar item included in the group to inflame the rug world , just a decent selection of mid to low end entry level variety items with fairly realistic opening bid points . That said its a diverse assortment so it’s worth your time to take a quick look , who knows , if you don’t look you won’t know !
The results from today’s “McInnes” on site auction in Hopedale , Ma. are live ” on the line” now and from a rug standpoint it went very well for them. Out of the 22 rug lots run across the podium only 2 failed to find new homes . Granted there was nothing worth mentioning in the group and they sold for very conservative numbers but as I always say from a rug dealers standpoint the best rug is a sold rug so inexpensive or not , sold is sold.
Now for the high point of the weavings offered .
Lot # 40 , Northwest Coast Chilkat dance blanket which I featured in the previous blog post and that carried a pre- sale estimate $6 – 10,000.00 ended up selling for a very respectable $ 32,000.00 . This figure is according to Liveauctioneer’s so I don’t think it includes the juice. Although not an oriental item still a nice upside pop for the consigner and certainly worth a line or two !
More current auction news featuring rugs and carpets.
The Cobb’s sale in Peterbourgh , N.H. in the books now and as far as the rugs included in the inventory go everything except two pieces ended up selling . This was another none descript group except for the one lot I featured in the previous post .
Lot # 29 , Arabatchi Ensi , pre – sale estimate $ 250-400.00 , (sic) , which ended up selling for $ 3,750.00 . Again this is an “invaluable” posted figure so I don’t think it includes the comm. I will say this about the price fetched . I had the feeling the piece may have synthetic dyes and other people mentioned this possibility to me too. Since the price fetched is on the moderate side if the colors aren’t good it could only mean the buyer missed this however if infact all the colors are natural then he or she could have made a very savvy purchase !
