Quiet beginning to a fresh week .
One new item worth a mention .
J.T. at “Rugtracker” is back on the job with a new post titled , Uighur Carpets from Altishahr , subject Khotan carpets .
As usual it’s up to his high standards so it’s certainly worth your time to take a look !
Christie’s , London held their “Major ” spring rug and carpet event today and for all “intents and of course purposes” it turned out to be modestly successful endeavor for Ms Broadhust and the Christie’s rug dept.
Out of the 226 total lots offered in the sale 103 ended up attracting attention . That works out to a sold percentage of right at 46%. Far from the sold percentage that Ms Broadhurst and staff were hoping for , that’s “fur sure” but the total sales figure standing at £ 4,113,600.00 is something to think about. As you would figure that total was anchored by the hand full of Classic carpets that sold well and with out them the total would have been much less but it is still what it is. In the end a weak sold percentage but high sales total seem to balance it out so a commendable job done by the Christie,s rug dept.which will give the rug world denizens something to belly ache about in this somewhat stagnant rug market.
Concerning the 2 items I featured in an earlier post both sold and for over their high estimates.
Lot # 17 , Kuba fragment , pre-sale est. £ 1,5-2,500.00 . Sold for £ 3,500.00 . Still a decent purchase for the new owner.
Lot # 20 , Lehman – Barenklau Kuba carpet , pre-sale est. £ 40-60,000.00 . Sold for £ 92,500.00 . Over the high estimate which was to be expected.
Christie’s , NYC also held their “Opulent Eye” sale today and as far as rugs and carpets go it was a little on the slow side for them . Out of the 50 rugs and carpets included in the sale only 17 found buyers . A sold percentage of about 32 % . Weak , very weak but there was nothing in the group to spark much more than local dealer interest as all eyes were on the London sale .
One lot # 19 , Chinese Silk carpet , pre- sale est. $5-6,000.00 ended up selling for $ 22,500.00 but that’s about it as far as highlights go .This type of carpet has been selling very well lately so this is no surprise.
Travel Day !
Fairly bumpy trip !
Finally on the ground .
First day on the mean streets of NYC this year .
Let’s just see how the market is fairing since the embargo has been lifted .
Up to this point every one I have come into contact with is in a good mood.
Unfortunately the whiner’s and complainers are still on the job so you end up encountering a limited amount of rug market drama , that said modest business is still being conducted .
Nothing truly great has surfaced so far but it’s still early so that could change . Decent fresh merchandise is available so the trip will certainly pay for itself and be profitable but as usual I am gonna put it all on hold till tomorrow.
It does not appear that lifting the embargo has made much of a difference in the old rug market at this time but it has changed the new rug market availability of modern Persian goods which are now becoming legal to deal in , if that’s your area of interest .
Christie’s , London’s , “Arts & Textiles of Islamic and Indian Worlds ” wrapped up today and out of the approxamatly 35 textiles lots included in the sale only 18 ended up selling . Not terrilbe but nothing to crow about either. Based on the total sales figure of , £ 589,250 this could be considered something of a let down for the Christie’s Islamic Antiquties Dept.?
As far as this trip goes everything I showed interest in except one item ended up in a positive mode. The availability of the one piece was put off till the middle of next week . Not a problem I have plenty of time .
Only one thing left to do , pack up for the flight back.
Travel Day and it’s looking good so far !
Smooth take off !
So another positive sojourn to the East Coast is in the books and plans for the next one in June are in the works.
Smooth landing !

Every now and then you get a heckler that’s never happy and just won’t quit.
Seems I have new comment from the same critic who’s posted in the past under different names and he’s unhappy with my last post because I did not elaborate on a couple of minor rug events at Sotheby’s and Christies .
But the truth is i looked over the content of the sales and other than one of the Sotheby’s offerings that included one modestly interesting lot as I stated in the previous post there was nothing much worth blogging about.
If you want real activity your just gonna have to wait till the Christie’s , London sale on April 19th !
So there you have it and if that’s not good enough you can always change the channel . Once again hiding behind a fake e mail address does not instill much confidence in the knowledge of the “comments” author ! So for all ” intensive purposes ” these are my thoughts on the situation and thats the way they will stand !
The Chrisitie’s, London sale titled “Art’s & Textiles of the Islamic and Indian Worlds” scheduled on April 22nd features 35 textile lots and one susani. Regrettably nothing in the way of a stand out item as far as textiles or the susani goes but it is a sale with 311 total lots so there’s plenty of interesting pieces to peruse . The susani does not appear to be notable especially as far as Vok Coll. standards go.
I did notice one lot worth a mention .
Lot # 385 , Ottoman Panel , 18th- 19th century . Pre- sale est. £ 7-10,000.00 . Considering the slim picking as far as textile items go in this sale it could be best of the bunch !
14 Days till NYC !
Udo and the crew at Austria Auction co. have announced their next rug and carpet extravaganza on April 30th in Vienna , Austria .
Unfortunately after a few passes through the 216 lot inventory I did not see anything to get amped up about. Plenty of decent clean items but nothing in the way of a stellar piece to get the carpet world buzzing . This is more reminisicent of a beginning collectors / house cleaning sale .The group includes a large selection of mid – range Turkmen pieces and low end flat weaves . Nothing wrong with that as modestly priced piece are moving pretty well in this spotty market but something special would have been nice.
Perhaps he’s holding back for now and planning something big for the upcoming fall season !
I did notice one questionable lot in the sale . Lot # 14 Shahsevan sumac bag , pre- sale est. € 12-14,000.00 . Just looks unusual to me ?
Christie’s , London is hosting a sale on May 12 titled “The Dani & Anna Ghigo Coll.” Pt. 2 that features features approximately 55 various rugs and carpets and 11 tapestries . Mr Ghigo was a fairly well known Antiquities and Carpet dealer in Italy and the inventory reflects his reasonably selective taste . The rugs and carpets included in the sale are a diverse group covering most of the weaving regions . Nothing in the way of a real barn burner but still a few pretty interesting items .
One lot in particular # 258 , Transylvanian rug , pre- sale est. L 40-60,000.00 is the high water point of the rugs and carpets in the offering and could do well .
That said its an eclectic assortment and certainly worth your time to take a quick run through as there are plenty of other things in the sale besides rugs and carpets that might stimulate your imagination.
Sotheby’s held their “Caramoor” Center general antique sale today and from the point of view of the rugs , carpets and textile items included in the offering it was fairly successful outing for them.
Out of the 19 carpet lots run across the podium only 2 lots failed to command any interest.
Unfortunately for the Sotheby’s rug dept. they were the 2 star lots I featured in a previous post.
Lot # 109 , Small Pattern Holbein carpet , 15th- 16th century . pre-sale estimate $ 600-800.000.00 . Unsold
Lot # 177 , Caucasian Shield carpet , 18th century , pre- sale estimate $ 80-120,000.00. Unsold.
All though these were very special carpets the pre- sale estimates were a little heavy on these items and maybe that scared potential bidders away!
All the textile lots ended up finding buyers.
Perhaps the Sotheby’s rug dept. will entertain offers now that the sale is over ?
The “Collection’s” sale that includes all the rug and carpet lots at Sotheby’s , NYC went off today and it did not turn out to well for them. Out of the 41 items in the auction only 21 ended up finding new homes . A sold percentage of just above 50 %. Far from a raging success. Nothing in the way of upside surprises either , the pieces that did sell garnered modest prices . The Caucasian rugs and formal room size pieces ( French & needle work carpets ) were particularly weak. As for the lot I featured in a previous post it failed to find a buyer .
Lot # 703 Khotan carpet , pre- sale estimate , $ 10-15,000.00 . Unsold . Condition issues , over restoration , who knows ?
7 Days till travel , NYC !

Material Culture , Philadelphia , Pa held their sale titled ” The Collectors Eye ” this past Saturday ( March 26th ) and for all intensive purposes from a rug , carpet and ethnic textile perspective at least and according to “Liveauctioneer’s ” posted results it turned out quite well for them .
Out of the 69 rug and carpet lots run across the podium only 5 failed to garner any interest and as for the ethnic textile group 60 pieces out of the 62 total items found buyers.
By any auction house’s standards this a very good turn of events for the crew at “Material Culture” considering there were no standout pieces included in the inventory to create any sort of buzz .
All said and done this sale indicates there is still a modest spark in the mid to low end rug and textile market , that is , of course if the “Liveauctioneer’s” data is accurate !
Christie’s , NYC has an auction titled “The Opulent Eye” scheduled on April 19th that includes 50 lots of rugs and carpets .
Unfortunately nothing in the way of a standout item in either the collectors realm or notable decorator carpets arena.
Just pretty much mid – range to slightly better room size carpets and a handful of common tribal type pieces .
Another lackluster production but check out if you must , you just never know something could strike your fancy .
Heads Up !
Hot off the press a new rug publication certainly worth your time to peruse .
Turkmen Carpets . A New Perspective .
Author , Jurg Rageth .
Not inexpensive at $225.00 + shipping but I just acquired a copy and it’s the most interesting Turkmen publication to appear in the last few years.
Limited copies available and rumor has it they maybe selling fast , so if Turkmen carpets are your area of interest you may want to get on it right away .
21 days till NYC !
The day of Fools !
Sotheby’s , NYC has a 2 day sale titled “Collections” scheduled on April 13-14th that includes 41 lots of mostly decorative rugs and carpets and 6 tapestries .
Nothing in the way of a top shelf item of any type in the offering but I did notice one piece I thought was worth a line or two. Lot # 703 , Khotan carpet . Pre- sale estimate , $ 10-15,000.00 . The piece looks like it’s in pretty good condition in the illustration so it’s a very realistic starting point if it’s not overly restored .
Sotheby’s , London has 2 sales scheduled in April that include a smattering of carpets , kelims and tapestries .
April 21 , titled “Alchemy” , features a few items , nothing particularly earth shaking in the rug dept. but an interesting general antique sale worth a quick look .
April 28th , titled “Collections& Collectors ” , 15 various rugs and kelims and 7 tapestries .
Slightly more interesting but still not a big deal.
And that’s all she wrote in a relatively weak , week!
