Let the great “MLK Day” celebration begin !
Via Con Dios , Glenn Frey , co founder of the one and only “Eagles “.
Not necessarily my cup of tea as far as music goes but a giant in the business and he leaves a legacy of work that will live on forever !
After a relatively quiet period in the the rug world over the holiday season the rug auction season is set to kick off with a bang !
At this early juncture there are no less than “12” productions on the docket in the next 60 days , up to this point !
So save your shekel's and you most likely won't be disappointed !
Sotheby's sale of the “I & A Schorsch” collection is one for the books and the whole inventory did very well for Sotheby's and the estate .
Regarding the oriental rugs included in the offering all sold and most for over their “high” pre- sale estimates .
Some well over !
As for the one lot I featured in a previous post , lot # 123 , Eagle Kazak , pre- sale est. $ 3-5,000.00 , it sold for $ 6,875.00 including comm.
Not one of the real highlights of the group , but not bad either .
One minor observation of the carpets in this sale .
They were for the most part Caucasians or Heriz area items and overall they brought fairly strong prices so it might show some strength in rug-dum at least in those areas !
Because of the snow storm in NYC today the ” Important Americana ” sale was postponed till tomorrow !
Unfortunately now , Jimmy Bain bass player extraordinaire , ex Dio , Rainbow , Hear ' n Aid , Last in Line and so much more !
R I P , you will not be soon forgotten !
Next up today .
Sotheby's “Important Americana” sale .
2 pm , post time on the east coast .
Let's get this party started !
So on this fine “playoff” Sunday the oriental carpet portion of the “Important Americana” auction just wrapped up an it turned out to be a fairly successful endeavor for M.J. and the “Sotheby's” rug dept.
Out of the 25 lots run across the podium only 5 failed to garner any interest .
That works out to a sold percentage of 80 %.
Yes , it's a small production but still an admirable effort .
One thing worth noting , all the pieces that failed to sell were decorative items , collectors items did very well !
However , nothing in the way of an upside surprise in the whole group.
Concerning the lot I featured in a previous post it did sell and as I figured sold well over the high estimate .
Lot # 1163 , Eagle Gul torba , pre- sale est. $ 3-5,000.00 .
Sold for $ 9,375.00 including comm.
Not a surprise that it sold over the high estimate but still a decent purchase for the new owner .
In the end considering the poor weather conditions on the east coast an admirable job , so hats off to M.J. and staff !!!

The Jan 28th ” Special Sale” at “Nagel Auktionen” in Stuttgart , Germany is live ” on the line” , now for your viewing amusement !
This is a general offering of the “Gert K. Nagel” collection that features 213 lots of all manor of rugs ,carpets , textiles and plenty of other unrelated “antique” items .
I am not really convinced this is in fact a true collection but that's what it's listed as so form your own opinion .
Unfortunately as with all the recent Nagel sales there is not a notable , standout decorator or serious collectors item in the whole group.
There is however an extensive selection of low end , inexpensive pieces , if that's your area of collecting !
To my eye this appears to be another house cleaning sale but it is what it is and since we are in a period of stagnation in the rug world I guess it's worth your time to take a quick run through the inventory . You may see something that peaks your interest.
In the spirit of fair play did find one piece that looks at least moderately intriguing in the illustration .
Lot # 2403 , Kazak prayer rug , pre- sale est. , € 2,500.00 . Previously published in Eder , Bennett Caucasian rugs . Not particularly old but if it's not over restored could be decent !
Not much fresh rug world babble , but one small piece of somewhat related news.
The annual “High Noon” auction and show in Mesa , Az. goes off on Jan 23-24 and I consider it to be the first ethnic collectable show of the new year.
It has nothing to do with oriental rugs and textiles but does feature American Indian art and textiles as well as Western collectibles which are still in the realm of ethnic type items so it could be a good indicator of how the collector turn out will be at the beginning of the new year .
Hopefully a good visitor participation and strong sales for the exhibitors !
Quiet time !
The beginning of another 3 day holiday weekend in the U.S. , “MLK Day” , so nothing in the way of action on the docket.
Play offs in full swing !
Long Beach Antique fair today.
Chasing down a lead that did not pay off so that's it for another lackluster Sunday road trip.
It appears the lifting of sanctions against “Iran” will end the oriental carpet embargo to the U.S. , shortly !
How will this affect the semi antique rug market this time around ?
Another flood of mid- 20th century rubbish ?
Your comments are welcome .

The new year picks up where the old year left off , very quiet as far as fresh rug world news goes.
Zilch , Nada , nothing happening !
Substantial rain and problems all day !
One fresh thing to report.
Sotheby's , NYC is staging an estate sale of the I.&A. Schorsch Coll. on Jan. 22-24 and it includes approximately 17 various oriental rugs and carpets of which 3 are Eagle Kazaks .
Nothing to get excited about but one of the Eagles looks fairly good .The way they did the catalogue the rugs are in panorama illustrations so if you see something you could be interested in you would need to request additional photos.
Lot # 123 , Eagle Kazak , pre- sale est. $3-5,000.00 .
Could be decent !
Sotheby's , NYC also has another sale scheduled on Jan. 22-23 titled “Important Americana” that includes 25 oriental rugs and carpets .
No real standout items in this group either and a few of them have been around the block before but still a few pretty good pieces with fairly conservative pre- sale estimates.
So it's worth a little of your time to take a quick look . Rugs start at lot #1154 .
One item that is not fresh to the market but the lower pre- sale estimate is very attractive.
Lot # 1163 , Eagle Gul torba , – sale est. a modest $ 3-5,000.00 .
With a substantially reduced starting point certainly could be interesting .
Then again as we all know it's not where you start but where you end up , however a chance looms on this piece !
Lemmy' s big send off is today at the “Rainbow bar and Grill” in Hollywood !!!
Adios , my friend and thanks for your legacy , it will live forever !
See you on the other side !
Rosebowl Sunday !
Damp and dry !
No action unfortunately .
