Nothing on the docket for today.
Travel Day tomorrow.
12/9/14
Things look good so far .
Minor delay leaving but smooth and more or less on time landing.
On the streets tomorrow.
12/10/14
The NYC rug market is in the midst of a major transition.
Tenant 's of the 31st building have to be cleared out by May , 2015 and everyone is scrambling to find a new location in the same vicinity .
Rents are a rising and it's creating something of a problem.
That said most everybody is still trying to keep business moving forward in this festive holiday season .
Moods are a little somber but still on the positive side !
As for the current state of commerce a few top shelf items have turned up and it looks like this trip will turnout positive .
Enshallah !
One minor footnote this afternoon a little snow to highlight the end of the day !
12/11/14
First up this morning we have the punctual results from yesterday's “Netherhampton ” rug and textile auction in Salisbury , U.K. and it finished up in the same general ball park as their previous affairs.
Out of the approximately 481 total items put up for your bidding pleasure 183 pieces failed to excite any interest .
This works out to a sold percentage of about 62 %.
Not a great success but it's acceptable just the same .
No big surprises as far as the upside goes , just modest prices for mid – range merchandise.
I will say this about the Netherhampton auction house , inexpensive merchandise a side they do move a lot of ordinary merchandise in a very anemic market !!
As for the 2 lots I featured in an earlier post both sold abet right in their pre- sale estimates.
Lot # 484 , Kazak rug , pre – sale est. £ 3-4,000.00 , sold for £ 3 ,000 , an average outcome I suppose.
In my humble opinion one of the slightly better pieces in a generally weak sale.
Lot # 502 Shah Sevan bags , pre – sale est. , sold for £ 360.00 . Most likely ordinary in person ?
All said and done a commendable job by Ms Barrett and staff.
Next up the infamous ,” One More Thing ”
Christie' s , NYC held their “Exceptional sale ” today and on the whole it went quite well for them .
The one carpet included in the offering which I featured in an earlier post , Lot # 8 , “Imperial Dragon carpet ” , Wanli period , pre- sale est. $ 6-800,000.00 sold for $ 665,000.00 including comm .
Right in the range but still an impressive number .
Time to tie up the loose ends before my Friday flight home.
21/12/14
Return day.
Moderately lengthy and annoying airport delay's this afternoon .
I have been lucky on this front so no big deal.
12/13/14
Back in the O.C.
We start with a little current rug hemisphere news .
J.T. at “Rugtracker” is back at it with another informative post .
This time titled “Hoist up the Jolly Roger”.
It deals with Spanish Renaissance carets .
Looks like the main point of this particular post is the fact the one of these carpets , Lot # 232 failed to garner any interest at the Dec 10 “Netherhampton” sale .
A very interesting article.
As always great and timely work , Mr Taylor. !
12/14/14
The last Rosebowl antique market of 2014 .
As it's been lately no action at the fair .
Maybe next year ?
On to this afternoons Grogan sale.
3:45 pm , in Cali.
The rug portion of the “Grogan” sale just wrapped up and it was not quite as successful from a sold stand point as their recent past results .
Out of the 45 lots run under the hammer this afternoon only 32 ended up finding new homes.
This works out to a sold percentage of about 71%.
Somewhat lower than their usual range which runs more in the neighborhood of the high 80's to the low 90's percentage wise.
There was also and unfortunately nothing in the way of any upside surprise's either .
Concerning the two lots I featured in an earlier post one sold , one did not.
Lot # 496 Bakshaish carpet , pre- sale est. $ 20-30,000.00 . This was the star lot of the group and it regrettably failed to garner any interest at that level.
The other 2 ” high end room size Persian city carpets with aggressive pre- sale estimates also failed to find any bidders
Lot # 499 , Qashgai carpet , pre-sale est. $ 3-5,000.00 . This item sold for $ 4,250.00 + the comm. A fairly snappy little carpet that changed hands right within the estimate range.
In the end a decent turn of events for Mr Grogan and staff in their new digs and hopefully the next outing will have a more positive result.
One last thing congrats on your new Beacon hill , Boston location !
P.S.
The photos from the Grogan and Christie's auctions are reposted today because the earlier posts that showed them were lost when my servers were hacked about 2 weeks ago.
